Quick answer

What material is best for engraved equipment labels?

Traffolyte, a layered engraving laminate, is the usual choice for electrical panels and MEP equipment indoors. It is cheap, colour coded and easy to read. For outdoor plant, high heat or chemical exposure, use anodised aluminium or stainless steel tags, which will not crack or fade in UAE sun.

Engraved nameplates cover two quite different jobs. One is presentation: office door plates, desk names and hotel room signs that should match the interior. The other is identification: labels on distribution boards, valves, pumps and switchgear that a maintenance engineer must read correctly years later. We produce both, using laser engraving for fine detail and rotary engraving where a deeper cut is needed.

On equipment jobs the hard part is usually the schedule, not the engraving. Hundreds of labels with references, ratings and colours need to be checked against drawings before production. We work from your spreadsheet, return a proof list for sign-off, and pack labels by floor or system. For full office branding schemes, from reception walls to floor graphics, see our corporate office signage page.

Types

Engraved Nameplates and Labels we make

  1. Traffolyte panel labels

    DBs, switchgear, control panels

Two-colour laminate engraved through the top layer to show contrasting text. Standard colours include white on black, white on red and black on yellow.

  2. Valve and pipe tags

    Valves, pumps, plant rooms

Round or rectangular tags in aluminium, brass or stainless, engraved with references and fixed with chain, wire or cable ties.

  3. Office door nameplates

    Offices, clinics, meeting rooms

Plates for names, titles and room numbers, often on a slide-in holder so staff changes do not need a new sign.

  4. Desk name plates

    Reception desks, executive offices

Freestanding blocks or metal plates with engraved names, sized to a single company template.

  5. Hotel room and suite plates

    Hotels, serviced apartments

Engraved brass, stainless or acrylic plates for room numbers and suite names, matched to corridor finishes and installed in batches.

  6. Rating and asset plates

    Factories, workshops, utilities

Durable metal plates carrying serial numbers, ratings or asset codes for machinery and equipment.

Choosing well

Ordering nameplates and labels

  • Send a schedule, not a list in an email

A spreadsheet with label text, size, colour and location for each item avoids missed lines. It also lets us return a proof sheet you can check against drawings.

  • Follow your project colour code

Consultants often specify colours for emergency, essential and normal circuits. Confirm these before production, as changing traffolyte colours later means re-making the labels.

  • Fix text size by reading distance

Panel labels read at arm's length can use small text. Plant room signs read from a walkway need larger characters. Mixing sizes within one system makes labels harder to scan.

  • Choose the fixing for the surface

Adhesive suits clean, flat panels. Screws or rivets suit vibrating equipment. Tags on pipes need chain or stainless cable ties so they do not slip or drop off.

  • Plan for name changes

For staff nameplates, use a fixed frame with replaceable inserts. New hires then need only a small engraved strip that matches the rest.

    Proof sheet

Every label is laid out on a proof sheet, numbered to match your schedule, for you to check and sign off.

  3. 3

    Engraving

Labels are laser or rotary engraved in our workshop, then edges are finished and holes drilled for fixings.

  4. 4

    Sorting and packing

Labels are bagged and marked by floor, room or system so installers find the right one quickly.

  5. 5

    Fixing on site

Our team can fit labels and nameplates, or deliver them packed for your contractor to install.

UAE conditions

Labels and nameplates in UAE buildings

  • Heat in plant rooms and rooftops

Rooftop chillers and outdoor DBs get very hot in summer. Plastic labels can warp or crack there, so we recommend engraved metal for any label outside air-conditioned space.

  • Consultant and authority approvals

Label formats on MEP projects are usually set by the consultant's specification. Civil Defence inspections often check that fire system equipment is labelled. We follow your approved schedule and confirm the current requirement for your project.

  • Arabic and English text

Office and hotel nameplates are commonly bilingual. Engraved Arabic needs enough size for the dots and joins to stay clear, so we check minimum heights on each plate.

FAQ

Engraved Nameplates and Labels: common questions

What is traffolyte?

Traffolyte is a layered plastic laminate made for engraving. It has a thin top colour over a contrasting core, so engraving removes the top layer and shows the text in the second colour. It is widely used for electrical panel and equipment labels because it is clear, colour coded and inexpensive in large quantities.

Laser or rotary engraving: which is better?

Laser engraving is better for fine text, logos and fast batches on laminates and coated metals. Rotary engraving cuts a physical groove with a cutter, which suits deep, paint-filled text on brass and stainless. Many jobs use both, with laser for door plates and rotary for heavy duty equipment tags.

Can you engrave labels from our Excel schedule?

Yes. We prefer to work from a spreadsheet. We import the text directly, which avoids typing errors, and return a numbered proof sheet. Once you approve it, every label is engraved and packed in the same order, so installers can match each label to its reference.

Will engraved labels survive outdoors in the UAE?

Engraved metal labels survive outdoors well. Anodised aluminium and stainless steel tags hold up to sun, heat and rain for many years. Standard traffolyte is meant for indoor use and can fade or crack in direct sun, so we suggest metal for rooftops, external plant and any area without shade.

Can you make nameplates that are easy to update?

Yes. A common setup is a fixed metal or acrylic frame on the door with an engraved insert that slides in. When someone changes role or leaves, you only reorder the insert. It keeps every door on the floor matching without paying to replace the whole plate each time.

What affects the cost of engraved nameplates?

Cost depends on the material, plate size, the amount of text, quantity, and fixing. Large batches of identical-format labels cost less per piece than a few one-off plates. Metal tags cost more than traffolyte. Send your schedule or list for a free quote, usually returned within 24 hours.
