Should I use 304 or 316 stainless steel for a sign in Dubai?
Use grade 316 for any sign within a few kilometres of the coast or exposed to sprinklers, pools or fountains. Its molybdenum content resists salt pitting. Grade 304 is fine indoors and for sheltered inland sites, and costs less. Both still need occasional cleaning to stay bright.
Stainless steel is chosen for its finish. A brushed grain reads as quiet and corporate, mirror polish catches light, and PVD coating turns the steel gold, rose gold or black without plating that peels. It is common on hotel entrances, office towers, clinics and premium villas, where the sign needs to match architectural metalwork such as handrails and door furniture.
This page focuses on the material itself: grade, finish, fabrication and care. If you are comparing letter styles more broadly, including acrylic and aluminium builds, see our 3D letters page. Here we cover what makes a stainless sign last in the UAE, where the wrong grade near the sea can show brown tea staining within a single humid season on the coast.
Stainless Steel Signs we make
Fabricated stainless letters
Building names, lobbies, hotel entrancesHollow letters with a folded or welded return, usually 30–80 mm deep, fixed on studs. Can be open-backed for halo lighting.
Solid cut stainless letters
Reception walls, small façadesLetters cut from flat stainless plate, finished on the face and edges, fixed flush or slightly off the wall. A slim, precise look.
Etched stainless plaques
Entrances, foundation plaques, directoriesFlat plates with text chemically or laser etched and paint filled. Durable for building names, opening plaques and directory panels.
PVD gold and coloured signs
Luxury retail, hotels, jewellery shopsStainless with a vacuum-deposited coating in gold, rose gold, bronze or black. Gives a metal-plated look with good wear resistance.
Stainless logo panels
Gates, feature walls, villasSheet panels with laser-cut logos, sometimes backed with coloured acrylic or lit from behind. Often used as a wall feature or gate plate.
Getting a stainless sign right
Match the grade to the air, not the budget
Choosing 304 to save money on a seafront tower usually costs more later in cleaning and replacement. If you can smell the sea from the site, or there are sprinklers nearby, specify 316.
Think about what the finish reflects
Mirror steel reflects the sky, cars and the street. On a busy road it can look grey and hard to read. Brushed finishes read more consistently from different angles.
Check the wall colour behind gold PVD
Gold letters need contrast. On beige stone they can disappear in daylight. A darker cladding panel, a recessed backing or halo lighting helps the letters stand out.
Ask about weld lines and returns
On fabricated letters the joint between face and return should be ground and refinished so no seam shows. Ask to see a sample letter in your chosen finish before full production.
Use stainless fixings with stainless signs
Mild steel screws or studs will rust and stain the surrounding metal. All fixings, spacers and brackets should be stainless, ideally the same grade as the sign.
Which stainless finish fits your sign?
What is the setting?
Grade 316, brushed
Grade 316 resists salt far better than 304, and a brushed finish hides the light dust and water marks that coastal air leaves. Plan a quick clean every few weeks.
PVD gold or rose gold
A PVD-coated stainless gives a warm, rich colour that lasts much longer than plating. Make sure the wall behind is dark or lit enough for the gold to read in daylight.
Brushed stainless, halo lit
Brushed letters look clean in daylight, and a soft halo glow behind them keeps the name visible at night without the glare of a lit face.
Grade 304, mirror or brushed
Indoors, 304 is enough. Mirror polish works well on a feature wall with controlled lighting. Choose brushed if the area gets a lot of touching or dusting.
PVD black or brushed on black
Black PVD gives a subtle tone-on-tone look. If you need stronger contrast, brushed stainless on dark cladding reads clearly from the street.
Stainless grades and finishes
| Option | Where it works | Look | Care needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 304 | Indoors, sheltered inland sites | Standard stainless colour | Wipe clean; can tea stain near the sea |
| Grade 316 | Coastal, poolside, irrigated areas | Almost identical to 304 | Lower risk of pitting in salt air |
| Brushed (hairline) | Most offices and façades | Satin grain, hides fingerprints | Clean along the grain |
| Mirror polish | Feature signs, lobbies | Reflective, high impact | Shows marks and scratches easily |
| PVD gold or rose gold | Hotels, luxury retail | Warm metallic colour | Avoid abrasive cleaners |
| PVD black | Modern façades, dark interiors | Deep graphite tone | Mild soap and soft cloth only |

Stainless steel in the UAE climate
Tea staining by the coast
Salt, humidity and dust leave brown surface marks on lower grades. This is usually surface staining, not structural failure, but it looks poor. Grade 316 and a smooth finish reduce it.
Hot surfaces in summer
Low-level stainless plaques in direct sun can get hot to the touch. Where people may lean on or touch a sign, we suggest shaded positions or brushed finishes over dark PVD.
Permits for façade signs
Exterior stainless letters showing a business name usually need a permit from Dubai Municipality or the local emirate or free-zone authority. We confirm the current requirement for your site and prepare the submission.
Arabic in metal
Arabic calligraphic logos have narrow strokes and dots that can be lost at small sizes. We set a minimum stroke width so the Arabic is as clear as the English.

Grade and finish sample
We confirm 304 or 316 from your location and show finish samples, so you approve brushed, mirror or PVD in real light.
- 2
Shop drawings
Letter sizes, depths, fixing points and any halo lighting are drawn to scale on your wall elevation.
- 3
Cutting and forming
Faces are laser cut and returns folded or welded in our factory, then joints are ground and refinished.
- 4
Coating and lighting
PVD-coated parts are finished and protected, and LED modules are fitted for halo-lit letters.
- 5
Fixing on site
Letters are set with a paper template, fixed on stainless studs, and wiring is concealed behind the wall line.
Stainless Steel Signs: common questions
Does stainless steel rust in Dubai?
Stainless steel does not rust like mild steel, but it can show brown surface staining in Dubai, especially near the sea. This is called tea staining and comes from salt and dirt on the surface. Grade 316, a smooth finish and regular cleaning keep it under control. The marks can usually be removed with a suitable stainless cleaner.
What is PVD gold and is it real gold?
PVD gold is not real gold. It is a thin, hard coating applied to stainless steel in a vacuum chamber, giving a gold colour that bonds to the metal. It is much more durable than gold paint or plating, but it can still be scratched by abrasive pads, so clean it only with a soft cloth.
Can stainless steel letters be illuminated?
Yes. The usual method is halo lighting, where LEDs inside open-backed letters shine onto the wall behind them. The steel face itself stays solid. You can also combine stainless returns with an acrylic face for fully lit letters, though that changes the look considerably and is closer to a standard lit letter.
How do I clean a stainless steel sign?
Clean a stainless steel sign with warm water, a mild detergent and a soft cloth, wiping along the grain on brushed finishes. Rinse and dry to avoid water spots. Avoid steel wool, scouring pads and bleach-based cleaners. Near the coast, cleaning every few weeks stops salt deposits building up.
Is stainless steel better than brass for a sign?
Stainless steel is lower maintenance than brass. It holds its colour without lacquer and copes better with UAE heat and humidity. Brass gives a warmer, more traditional look that develops a patina over time. If you want a gold tone with less upkeep, PVD gold stainless is a common middle ground.
What affects the price of stainless steel signage?
Price depends on the grade, sheet thickness, letter size and depth, the finish, and whether letters are lit. Mirror polish and PVD add cost over brushed, and 316 costs more than 304. Fabricated letters cost more than flat cut ones. Share your logo and location for a free quote within about 24 hours.
