    Design Principles

What makes a menu board actually sell

A menu board is not just a price list — it is your highest-ROI sales tool. These are the six design principles we apply to every menu board we produce, drawn from F&B industry research and our experience across hundreds of UAE restaurant installations.

    01
    Fewer items, higher spend
Menus with 6–8 items per category consistently outperform those with 12+ in average spend per head. We design boards with clear visual hierarchy that highlights your highest-margin items — not just lists every SKU equally.
    02
    Food photography placement
Items with a food photograph sell 30–70% more than those without. We design your board layout to accommodate hero photography for your 2–3 most profitable dishes, sized correctly for the viewing distance.
    03
    Price presentation psychology
We avoid right-aligned price columns (they train customers to read down the cheapest column). Instead, prices are embedded within the item description, in a smaller font than the item name.
    04
    Legibility at ordering distance
For QSRs and food courts, ordering distance is typically 2–4m. Item names must be a minimum of 18pt equivalent; descriptions 10pt equivalent. We calculate actual minimum type size for every board based on the surveyed viewing distance.
    05
    Arabic / English bilingual layout
UAE menu boards need both Arabic and English — and they need to look designed, not translated. We set Arabic and English in matching weight typefaces, aligned on shared baselines, with a clear visual separator.
    06
    Halal, calorie, allergen display
UAE food regulations (Dubai Municipality Regulation No. 11/2019) require calorie counts to be displayed per menu item for chain restaurants above a certain size. We integrate all compliance elements into the menu design without making the board look like a nutritional label.

    Materials

What your menu board is made from

Indoor restaurant environments have high ambient heat from kitchen proximity, grease vapour, and heavy cleaning. Menu board materials must handle all three without yellowing, warping, or losing print clarity.

    Cast Acrylic
    Standard
3mm or 5mm cast (not extruded) acrylic face — UV-stable, will not yellow near kitchen heat sources for 3+ years. UV-printed at 1440 dpi. Rigid, scratch-resistant, wipe-clean.
    Flex-Face PVC
320gsm translucent PVC fabric — used for wide menu boards (above 1.2m) where a single acrylic sheet would require a visible join. Secured in keder rail. Replaceable from the front without tools.
    Aluminium Frame
Extruded 6063-T5 aluminium, powder-coated. Typically black, white, or brand-matched RAL. Houses LED strip or module array. Grease-resistant powder coat — critical for kitchen-adjacent installations.
    LED Modules
Samsung IP40 LED modules rated for indoor use. Colour temperature 6500K (cool white — standard for food photography reproduction), 5000K, or 4000K warm white. Brightness calibrated to ambient lux level of your space.
    Chalkboard Panel
5mm MDF with proprietary chalkboard paint or real slate laminate. Mounted in a powder-coated steel or aluminium frame. Available as wall-fixed panel, A-frame floor stand, or hanging menu board.

    Why Bayan Signage

    Calorie-compliant. Bilingual.
    On time.

A menu board order in Dubai has three requirements most sign companies miss: DM calorie display formatting, correct Arabic typography, and a face panel the owner can reprint themselves without coming back to us every time prices change.

    01
    DM calorie display designed in
We format calorie counts, kcal unit labels, and the 2,000 kcal daily reference statement into the menu layout from the start — not bolted on after the design is done.
    02
Arabic typography — designed, not translated
We set Arabic type in the correct weight, direction, and baseline alignment alongside English. We do not machine-translate and paste.
    03
    Reprints in 2–3 days
When your menu changes, we reprint only the face panel — the frame stays on the wall. Standard reprint turnaround is 2–3 working days. We keep your artwork file on record so reorders are fast.
    04
    Frames designed for self-service reprints
We design all snap-frame and keder-rail boards so the face panel can be removed and replaced by your staff without tools. No call-out charge.
    05
    Restaurant opening deadline commitment
Menu boards are almost always the last sign a restaurant needs before opening. We understand this pressure and schedule accordingly.
    How We Work

From menu content to installed board in 5 steps

    01
    Brief & site visit
We visit your restaurant or counter space, measure the available wall area, assess ambient lighting, confirm the number and size of boards, and check power access for LED. Free across Dubai, Sharjah, and Ajman.
    02
    Menu content from you
You supply your menu items, prices, descriptions, calorie data (required by DM regulation), halal status, and any allergen flags. We supply a content template if needed.
    03
    Design & proof
We produce a full-colour digital proof at exact scale — showing both Arabic and English layout, calorie information, photography placement, and frame finish. Revisions included at no extra charge.
    04
    Fabrication
Aluminium frames are cut and welded, LED is wired and tested, face panels are UV-printed and fitted. A complete 3-panel LED lightbox menu board system is typically fabricated in 7–10 working days.
    05
    Installation & reprint guide
We install, connect, and test the boards at your counter. We walk you through the face panel removal process and supply a simple laminated guide for your team.

    ★★★★★

"We opened a cafe in JLT and needed boards that looked premium — not generic QSR lightboxes. Bayan designed a printed acrylic system with a matte black frame and custom typography. Many customers comment on them."

    Sarah Petrov
    Cafe Owner, JLT Dubai
    ★★★★★

"Our hotel F&B team needed menu boards for four outlets. Bayan produced a consistent system across all four with different finishes per outlet. The Arabic layouts were correctly typeset, which our previous supplier had always got wrong."

    FAQ

    Common questions about menu boards

    • Yes. Dubai Municipality Regulation No. 11/2019 requires food establishments to display calorie information on all menus and menu boards. Calorie counts must appear per item, in kcal units, alongside a 2,000 kcal daily reference statement on the board. We design all menu boards to meet these requirements.
    • No. Calorie data must be produced by a food technologist or nutritionist based on your actual recipes and portion sizes — this is a food science function, not a sign production function. You supply us the calorie figures; we lay them out correctly on the board in DM-compliant format.
    • Standard reprint turnaround is 2–3 working days from approved artwork. We hold your original design file and board dimensions on record — you send us the updated content and we produce and deliver new face panels. Your team installs the new faces without tools.
    • Yes — bilingual Arabic/English menu board design is a standard part of our service. We set Arabic text in the correct direction and weight, aligned with the English layout. You must supply the Arabic menu copy; we set it correctly.
    • For a standard food court ordering scenario (customer standing 3–5m from the board), minimum panel height is 900mm and panel width 600–900mm per section. Most food court tenants use a 3-panel system totalling 1,800–2,700mm wide. We calculate the correct dimensions during our site visit.
    • Yes. We print using calibrated ICC profiles matched to your brand colour references — Pantone, CMYK, or RAL. Frame powder coat colour is matched to your RAL or brand specification. We produce a physical colour proof before full production for critical brand colour matching.
    • Interior menu boards within your restaurant premises do not require a Dubai Municipality sign permit. If the menu board is visible from or mounted on the exterior of the building, a DM sign permit is required. We handle permit applications for exterior installations.
    • A complete LED lightbox menu board system (3–5 panels, bilingual, calorie-formatted) typically takes 7–14 working days from approved artwork to installed. This includes frame fabrication, LED wiring, face printing, and installation.
