    Totem height for every entrance

A totem sign is deliberately shorter than a pylon or unipole — it's read at walking pace or from a slow-moving vehicle at an entrance, not from a highway at speed. Height is chosen for the approach, not for maximum visibility.

    Brand Identity Totems

A single illuminated panel carrying the logo and a short tagline — the most common totem format for a dealership forecourt, office entrance, or standalone retail unit. Backlit acrylic face on an aluminium-clad frame.

Multi-panel directory totem sign with icons Dubai
    Multi-Panel Directory Totems

The logo panel sits above a stacked set of smaller illuminated or printed panels — each carrying an icon and short label for a service, department, or amenity. Used where a single sign needs to communicate more than a name: hours, services offered, or a short wayfinding cue.

Digital screen totem sign integration Dubai
    Digital-Ready Totems

The frame is built with a cut-out and wiring conduit for an integrated digital screen module — either a small LED display or an outdoor-rated LCD panel — alongside the static illuminated logo panel above it. The totem structure and screen integration are engineered together, not retrofitted.

Dual brand co-branded totem sign Dubai
    Dual-Brand & Co-Branded Totems

Two distinct brand panels on one shared structure — common at a shared driveway, a franchise group with two concepts on one plot, or a business park entrance shared by a management company and an anchor tenant. Panel proportions and colour zoning are agreed with both brands before fabrication.

EV charging amenity totem sign Dubai
    EV Charging & Amenity Totems

Compact illuminated totems marking EV charging bays, visitor parking, or a specific amenity within a larger site — usually a single icon-led panel with clear pictograms rather than dense text, designed to be read correctly at a glance from a moving vehicle.

    Illuminated directional totem sign Dubai
    Illuminated Directional Totems

A totem carrying directional arrows alongside brand or zone identification — used at the internal junctions of a business park or gated community where a single freestanding sign needs to both identify a zone and point the way into it.

    Permits & Approvals

What approvals a totem sign needs in Dubai

Totem signs sit below the height and scale that trigger the heaviest structural review, but they still need sign-off from the relevant authority before installation.

    Dubai Municipality
A DM sign permit is required for any freestanding sign on DM-jurisdiction land, including totems. DM reviews size, illumination, content, and structural method. We prepare and submit the technical drawings and site plan.
    RTA (where applicable)
A totem positioned close to an RTA-managed road or visible from it may require an RTA NOC covering sight-line impact — this applies mainly to totems at plot entrances directly on a main road, not internal business park or community signage.
    Landlord / Community NOC
For totems inside a business park, gated community, or shared commercial plot, the landlord or owners' association typically needs to approve the design and position before any DM submission — this often has stricter design guidelines than the municipal minimum.
    Free Zone Authorities
Totems inside JAFZA, TECOM, Dubai South, and other free zones fall under that authority's own sign approval process rather than DM. We identify the correct authority before design is finalised.
    Pricing Guide

What totem signs cost in Dubai

    Materials

What every totem sign is made from

Totem signs are viewed up close and at low speed, more like a piece of architecture than a distant billboard — finish quality matters as much as structural integrity. Every material is specified for UAE heat, UV, and coastal humidity.

    Aluminium Frame
    Standard
Welded aluminium box frame — lighter than steel and naturally corrosion-resistant, the standard choice for totems up to 3m. Powder-coated in any RAL colour to match brand guidelines.
    Steel Frame
    Larger / landmark totems
RHS steel frame with a hot-dip galvanised or powder-coated finish — specified for totems above 3m or in exposed coastal locations where additional structural rigidity is needed.
    UV-Stabilised Acrylic Face
Cast acrylic panel, UV-printed or vinyl-applied graphics, backlit by internal LED modules. Resists yellowing far longer than standard acrylic under sustained Dubai sun.
    Aluminium Composite Panel Cladding
Non-illuminated sections of the totem body are typically clad in ACM — rigid, corrosion-resistant, and available in a wide colour and finish range including brushed metal effects.
    Concrete Footing
All totems are set on an engineered concrete footing sized to the structure's height and local wind loading — never surface-bolted to paving, which fails under UAE wind conditions within a season or two.
    Comparison

Totem sign vs pylon sign vs monolith sign

The three freestanding sign formats are often confused because they solve overlapping problems at different scales. Here's how to tell them apart.

    Applications

    Where we install totem signs

    Auto Dealerships
Brand identity totems at the forecourt entrance — often the single most photographed sign on the site, and usually specified to the manufacturer's exact brand guideline colours and proportions.
    Business Parks & Free Zones
Directory totems at internal junctions identifying tenants, and larger co-branded totems at the main entrance shared between the park operator and anchor tenants.
    Gated Communities & Residential
Landmark entrance totems establishing community identity, paired with smaller directional totems at internal road junctions.
    Hotels & Hospitality
Driveway totems that establish brand presence before a guest reaches the entrance — frequently illuminated for strong night-time arrival visibility.
    EV Charging Stations & Parking
Compact icon-led totems marking charging bays, visitor parking, and accessible parking within a larger commercial or residential site.
    Retail Plazas & Strip Malls
Multi-tenant directory totems at the plaza entrance, listing current tenants with a layout designed to be updated as tenants change.
    Why Bayan Signage

    Compact enough to guide.
    Bright enough to brand.

A totem sign has to do two jobs a pylon sign doesn't — identify a brand and orient a visitor, often in a single small structure. Getting the hierarchy right between those two jobs is the actual design skill.

    01
    Icon systems designed, not templated
For multi-panel directory totems, we design the icon set specifically for your site rather than pulling from a generic clip-art library — consistent stroke weight, consistent sizing, and legible at the distance the totem will actually be read from.
    02
Digital integration engineered from the start
A digital screen module needs power routing, ventilation, and a structural cut-out planned into the frame before fabrication — not cut into a finished totem afterward. We design digital-ready totems as one integrated structure.
    03
Wind load calculated for the real footing
Even a 2m totem needs a properly engineered concrete footing in UAE wind conditions. We calculate footing size from the totem's height, face area, and site exposure — not a generic footing size regardless of design.
    04
Finish quality built for close viewing
A totem is seen up close, at walking pace or through a car window — panel seams, edge finishing, and paint quality that would be invisible on a distant pylon are immediately visible on a totem. We finish accordingly.
    05
    Permit documentation prepared
We prepare DM (or the relevant authority) sign permit submissions and landlord/community NOC request packs. You approve the design; we manage the paperwork.
    How We Work

From brief to installed totem sign in 5 steps

    01
    Brief & site visit
We collect your brief, visit the entrance or junction the totem will occupy, and note approach angle, viewing distance, and any landlord design guidelines that apply.
    02
    Layout & icon design
For directory or multi-panel totems, we design the panel hierarchy and icon set. For single-panel brand totems, we confirm proportions and colour against your brand guideline. You approve the design before fabrication.
    03
    Structural & permit drawings
We produce the structural drawing showing frame, footing, and — where a digital screen is included — the power and ventilation routing, then submit to DM or the relevant authority.
    04
    Fabrication
Frame welding, ACM cladding, acrylic face printing, LED wiring, and powder-coat finishing — all completed in our Ajman factory. Digital screen modules are test-fitted before delivery.
    05
    Installation
Footing excavation and pour, structure installation, and final alignment and lighting check. Most totems are installed within a single day once the footing has cured.

    What our clients say

    ★★★★★

"We needed a brand-compliant entrance totem for our new dealership forecourt, matching the manufacturer's exact colour and proportion guidelines. Bayan got the specification right first time and handled the DM permit without us needing to follow up."

    ★★★★★

"Our business park needed directory totems at three internal junctions, all reading consistently from a moving vehicle. The icon system Bayan designed is genuinely easy to read at a glance — exactly what we asked for."

    SK
    Sara Khalil
    Community Manager, Business Park, Dubai
    ★★★★★

"We wanted a totem with an integrated digital screen for rotating tenant promotions. Bayan engineered the whole structure around the screen from the start rather than treating it as an afterthought — it looks like one integrated piece, not a screen bolted onto a sign."

    FAQ

    Common questions about totem signs

    • A totem sign is a compact, typically 1.5m–4m freestanding sign designed for close-range reading at an entrance or directory point — walking pace or a slow-moving vehicle. A pylon sign is taller (4m–12m or more), structurally heavier, and designed for visibility from a distance at road speed, such as along a highway or a commercial plot boundary. The two solve different problems: a totem orients and identifies at the point of arrival; a pylon attracts attention from further away.
    • Yes. Digital-ready totems are engineered with a structural cut-out, power routing, and ventilation for an integrated LED or outdoor-rated LCD screen module, built in alongside a static illuminated logo panel. This needs to be planned into the frame design from the start — retrofitting a screen into a totem designed only for a static face is far more limited and rarely looks integrated.
    • In most cases, yes. Any freestanding illuminated sign on DM-jurisdiction land requires a DM sign permit covering size, illumination, and structural method, regardless of how compact the totem is. Totems inside a free zone fall under that free zone's own authority instead. We identify the correct authority and handle the submission.
    • Height depends on what the totem needs to do. A single-brand identity totem at a dealership or office entrance is typically 1.5m–2m. A multi-panel directory totem carrying several icon sections is usually 2m–3m to keep the lowest panel legible without crouching. A landmark community or hotel entrance totem can go to 4m for a stronger arrival presence. We recommend the right height during the site visit based on approach angle and viewing distance.
    • Yes — co-branded or dual-brand totems are common at shared driveways, franchise groups with two concepts on one plot, or business park entrances shared between a management company and an anchor tenant. Panel proportions and colour zoning are agreed with both brands before the design is finalised, so neither brand's identity is compromised.
    • Once the footing has cured — typically 3–5 days after the concrete pour — the totem structure itself is usually installed and aligned within a single day. Total project time from brief to installed sign is more commonly driven by permit approval and manufacturer brand-guideline sign-off (for dealership totems) than by the physical installation itself.
