What is the best metal for an outdoor sign in the UAE?
For most outdoor signs in the UAE, powder-coated aluminium is the best choice. It is light, does not rust and holds colour well in strong sun. Use mild steel when you need welded strength, and corten when you want a deliberate rust finish away from walkways that could stain.
Metal signs suit places where a printed panel would look temporary: villa gates, compound entrances, landscaped frontages, restaurant terraces and factory yards. We cut the shapes on our own laser and CNC machines, so a logo, a house number or a full brand panel can be produced to the exact outline in your artwork rather than simplified to fit a stock size.
The real choices are the metal, its thickness and how it is finished. Aluminium, mild steel, galvanised steel and corten each behave differently in Gulf heat and coastal air. We also design and weld the posts, brackets and frames, which matters as much as the face. A heavy panel needs footings and fixings sized for wind, not a few wall plugs.
Which metal suits your sign?
Where will the sign go?
Powder-coated aluminium
Aluminium will not rust in salty air. Pair it with stainless steel fixings and a marine-suitable coating. Avoid bare mild steel and corten here, as both will corrode or stain faster than you expect.
Corten steel
Corten weathers to a warm rust tone that sits well with sand, stone and planting. Keep it clear of pale paving or render, or add a drip edge, because early run-off can stain.
Steel frame with aluminium face
A galvanised steel structure gives strength and wind resistance, while an aluminium face keeps weight down and resists rust. We size the footing and posts for the panel area and site exposure.
Laser-cut aluminium or stainless
A cut aluminium panel on stand-off pins is light and low maintenance. For a premium look on a small sign, consider stainless steel instead, brushed or with a gold PVD finish.
Coated mild or galvanised steel
Steel handles knocks from vehicles and forklifts better than thin aluminium. Have it galvanised before painting so chips do not turn into rust streaks within the first summer.
Custom Metal Signs we make
Laser-cut logo panels
Gates, feature walls, terracesA flat metal sheet with the logo or name cut through it, often fixed off a wall so the shadow becomes part of the design.
Corten steel signs
Landscaping, resorts, farm entrancesWeathering steel that forms a stable orange-brown rust layer. Suits landscaped sites and desert-toned architecture where a raw, natural look is wanted.
Powder-coated aluminium panels
Shopfronts, villas, office entrancesLight, rust-free panels coated in any RAL colour, with cut-out or applied graphics. The practical default for most outdoor brand signs.
Flat cut metal letters
Walls with limited projectionIndividual letters cut from solid plate and fixed with studs and spacers. A low-profile option where built-up 3D letters would be too deep.
Welded sign structures
Freestanding signs, yards, compoundsSteel frames, posts and gantries that carry sign faces, sized for the panel weight and site wind exposure, then galvanised or painted.
Metal plaques and house numbers
Villas, buildings, small entrancesSmaller cut or etched pieces for villa numbers, building names and opening plaques, mounted flush or on stand-off pins.
How to specify a metal sign
Pick the metal for the site, not the photo
A corten sign looks great online, but beside a pale marble entrance its rust run-off will mark the stone. Near the sea, aluminium avoids the corrosion problems that untreated steel gets within months.
Keep cut details above a minimum width
Very thin strokes and tiny counters in a logo can warp or snap. We check your artwork and suggest small adjustments, usually thickening bridges, so the cut piece stays rigid and readable.
Use stand-off fixings for depth
Mounting a cut panel 20–40 mm off the wall adds a shadow line and lets water and dust escape behind it. It also hides the fixings, which looks cleaner than visible screws.
Choose a coating made for outdoor sun
Specify an outdoor-grade polyester powder coat. Dark and saturated colours fade faster in UAE UV, so ask us about colour retention before settling on a deep red or black.
Design the structure with the face
Posts, base plates and footings should be drawn at the same time as the sign. A late decision to make the panel bigger often means the original frame is no longer strong enough.

Metal options compared
| Metal | Typical thickness | Finish | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminium sheet | 2–6 mm | Powder coat or paint | Dents more easily than steel |
| Aluminium plate (letters) | 6–15 mm | Powder coat, brushed | Cost rises with thickness |
| Mild steel | 2–10 mm | Primer plus paint or powder coat | Rusts quickly if coating is damaged |
| Galvanised steel | 1.5–6 mm | Galvanised, then painted | Needs proper prep before paint |
| Corten steel | 2–6 mm | Left to weather | Run-off can stain floors and walls |
| Steel structure (posts, frames) | Hollow section to suit load | Hot-dip galvanised or painted | Footing size set by wind load |
From brief to installed custom metal signs
- 1
Site check and brief
We look at the wall or ground, sun direction and distance from the sea, then agree the metal, size and fixing method.
- 2
Cut drawings
Your logo is converted to clean vectors, adjusted for minimum cut widths, and shown on a scaled drawing of the elevation.
- 3
Cutting and welding
Parts are laser cut or CNC routed in our Ajman factory, and frames or posts are welded and ground smooth.
- 4
Finishing
Steel is primed or galvanised, then powder coated or painted. Corten is left raw or pre-weathered on request.
- 5
Installation
Our team sets footings or wall anchors, fixes the sign level, and wires any lighting through a certified connection.
Metal signs in UAE conditions
Heat and expansion
Dark metal in direct summer sun can reach well above air temperature. We allow for expansion in large panels and long letters with slotted fixings so they do not bow or pull out.
Salt air near the coast
In Jumeirah, Palm and marina locations, use aluminium or galvanised and coated steel with stainless fixings. Mixing bare steel and aluminium can cause galvanic corrosion at contact points.
Sand and dust
Textured and cut surfaces collect dust. A smooth powder coat and open backs make cleaning easier, which matters for signs that need to look sharp all year.
Permits and structures
Outdoor business signs usually need a permit from Dubai Municipality or the relevant emirate or free-zone authority, and tall freestanding structures may need drawings. We confirm the current requirement for your site and handle the application.
Arabic and English text
Where a trade name is shown, authorities typically expect Arabic alongside English. Arabic letterforms have fine joins, so we size them so both scripts survive laser cutting cleanly.
Custom Metal Signs: common questions
How long does a metal sign last outdoors in Dubai?
A well-made aluminium or galvanised steel sign usually lasts many years outdoors in Dubai. The coating is what wears first. Outdoor-grade powder coat holds up to sun and dust far better than standard paint, and lighter colours fade more slowly than dark ones. Regular gentle cleaning and fixing any chips early keeps the metal underneath protected.
Does corten steel keep rusting until it fails?
No. Corten forms a dense rust layer that slows further corrosion, so the steel underneath stays sound. It needs cycles of wetting and drying to stabilise, and constant moisture or salt spray can stop that layer forming properly. That is why we usually advise against corten right on the coast or where it stays damp.
Can you cut my exact logo out of metal?
Yes, in most cases. We cut directly from your vector artwork on our laser and CNC machines. Very fine lines or loose inner shapes may need small changes so the part stays rigid, or a backing panel to hold floating pieces. We show you the adjusted outline on a drawing before cutting.
Is aluminium or steel better for a sign?
Aluminium is better for most signs because it is lighter and does not rust. Steel is better when the sign takes impact, needs welded strength or must carry a heavy load. Many freestanding signs use both: a steel frame for structure and an aluminium face for the graphic.
Can a metal sign be illuminated?
Yes. A cut panel can be halo lit with LEDs behind it, backlit through acrylic inserts in the cut-outs, or lit from the ground with spotlights. Each option changes the panel depth and wiring route, so lighting should be decided at the drawing stage, not added later.
What affects the cost of a custom metal sign?
The main cost drivers are the metal and its thickness, overall size, cutting complexity, the finish, and any lighting. Structure and installation also count: a freestanding sign with footings costs more to install than a panel on an existing wall. Send us your artwork and site photos for a free quote, usually within 24 hours.
