Drive-Through Menu Signs in the UAE

Drive thru menu boards built for the lane, not the counter

A drive thru menu board is the outdoor sign beside the speaker post where the driver reads the menu and places the order. Around it sit a pre-sell board earlier in the queue, a clearance bar at the lane entry and directional signs from the road to the pickup window. We make them for quick-service restaurants, coffee and juice chains, bakeries, pharmacies with car collection and petrol station food outlets across the UAE.

This is not an indoor menu moved outside. A driver reads the board from a car seat, through a side window, often in direct sun, and usually decides in well under a minute. Small type, long menus and detailed food photography that work above a counter fail here, and indoor lightboxes or low-brightness screens do not survive a UAE summer. The cabinet has to be sealed against dust, ventilated against heat, set at the right height and angle, and protected from car mirrors.

Bayan Signage has built outdoor signs at Alam Square, Industrial Area 2, Ajman since 2016, as the production arm of Bayan Advertising, which has 15 years in the UAE. We weld galvanised steel posts, fabricate and powder-coat aluminium cabinets, print backlit film up to 3.2 m wide and assemble and test LED lighting in-house. On digital boards, the screens are manufacturer products that we select for sunlight readability and integrate into our own cabinets.

Our process

How we build a drive thru menu board in our Ajman factory

  1. Lane survey with a real car

We drive the lane, mark where the driver's window stops at the speaker, check the sun at your peak hours and locate power and data routes. The survey is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.

  2. Layout, menu and structural drawing

Our designers set board height, angle and panel layout for the item count and both scripts. Draftsmen produce the shop drawing, foundation detail and structure used for fabrication and the permit.

  3. Cabinet and post fabrication

Aluminium cabinets are CNC-cut, folded, gasketed and powder-coated; posts and frames are welded from galvanised steel. Ventilation, filters and drainage are built into the cabinet.

  4. Lighting or screen integration

Static boards get LED modules laid out for even backlighting and run at full brightness in our test area. Digital boards get their screens, media player and cooling fitted and tested.

  5. Graphics and inspection

Menu panels are printed on backlit film at high ink density so food looks right lit and unlit. Each board is checked against approved artwork and sealing details before dispatch.

  6. Foundation and installation

Our crew sets out the base, fixes the board on cast-in bolts, connects power through the ducts under the lane, fits kerbs or bollards and commissions the board after dark.

Expert advice

Advice from our drive-through project team

Most drive-through problems are about geometry and time, not graphics. These are the points we settle on site before anything is fabricated.

Mark the lane with a car, not a drawing

Site plans rarely show where a driver actually stops. We bring a car, stop it at the speaker and mark the window position, then repeat with a large SUV if possible. Driver eye height runs from about 1.1 m in a low saloon to 1.7 m in a pickup, so we centre the readable zone around 1.5 to 1.8 m and keep best sellers in that middle band where both see them.

Show fewer items, larger

Item names of 25 to 40 mm, prices of 30 to 50 mm and category headings of 60 to 80 mm read comfortably at 1 to 2 m. That means a board holds around 20 to 30 core items, with pictures for the top sellers. Bilingual menus double the text, so we cut items rather than shrink the type. Restaurants that try to fit the whole indoor menu usually get slower orders and longer queues.

Check the sun at your busiest hour

A board facing west at dinner time takes the low sun straight on the face, which washes out film and screens and cooks the cabinet. We check the orientation against your peak trading hours at the survey. Where the position cannot change, we add a canopy, an anti-glare face and, on digital boards, the brightest screens and strongest cooling the cabinet can take.

Put the pre-sell board one car length early

A pre-sell board works only if drivers have time to read it while queuing. We place it at least one car length before the order point, ideally where the queue usually stops. It should carry a few combos or a new item, not a second copy of the menu. Too much detail defeats its purpose and slows the queue it is meant to speed up.

Protect the board from the cars it serves

Wing mirrors, tight turns and impatient drivers damage menu boards more often than weather does. We set the board 1 to 2 m from the lane edge with a raised kerb or bollards, and we add a clearance bar at the lane entry so tall vans stop before reaching the canopy. Replacing a kerb is cheap; replacing a digital cabinet is not.

Pricing

Drive thru menu board price in Dubai: what affects the cost

Every drive-through is quoted from the site plan and the menu. Send the site plan or photos of the lane, your menu and brand guidelines, and you will receive an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

Static or digital

Static backlit boards cost far less to build. Digital boards add sunlight-readable screens, a media player, cooling and content setup.

Number of signs in the lane

A menu board alone is one item. Pre-sell boards, clearance bars, directional signs and an entrance pylon each add fabrication and foundations.

Board size and panel count

More panels mean more cabinet, more LEDs and more backlit film, and wider boards need heavier posts and foundations.

Canopy and protection

An integrated canopy, bollards and kerbs add steel and site work but protect the investment and the driver's experience.

Groundworks and power

Foundations, ducts under the lane and power and data connections depend on the site and whether the lane is new or already surfaced.

Permits and approvals

Municipality, landlord and site operator submissions are prepared by our draftsmen and listed separately on the quote.

Approvals

Permits for drive thru menu boards in Dubai and the UAE

Illuminated drive-through signs and their structures usually need approval from Dubai Municipality, the relevant municipality in Sharjah or Ajman, or the free-zone or master-developer authority where the site sits. Petrol station operators, mall landlords and community developers often add their own criteria for size, position and brightness. Near main roads, RTA may also have a view on signs facing traffic.

Our technical draftsmen prepare the elevations, structural and foundation details and specification for each submission, check that the brand name matches the trade licence in Arabic and English, and follow the application through. Requirements vary by site and change over time, so we confirm the current rules for your exact plot at the survey.

FAQ

Drive-Through Menu Signs questions we are asked most

How much does a drive thru menu board cost in Dubai?

It depends mainly on whether the board is static or digital, its size and panel count, the other signs in the lane, the canopy and protection, groundworks and permits. A static board with a pre-sell sign costs far less than a full digital lane. Send the site plan, menu and brand guide, and we will send an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

Should I choose a static or digital drive-through board?

Static backlit boards suit restaurants with stable menus and single sites; they cost less to build and run. Digital boards suit chains with dayparts, frequent promotions or many branches, because menus change from software. They cost more and need sunlight-readable screens, cooling and someone to manage the content. Hybrid boards combine both.

How bright does an outdoor menu screen need to be in the UAE?

Screens in direct sun generally need high-brightness panels of around 2,500 nits or more, plus an anti-glare front and proper cooling. Standard indoor screens are unreadable outdoors at midday. Static boards use LED backlighting with a light sensor so the face is bright by day and comfortable at night.

How long does an outdoor drive-through board last?

A well-sealed, ventilated board typically gives many years of service. Our static outdoor boards are covered for 5 years on LEDs, powder coat and structure, and the LED modules are rated around 50,000 hours. Screens on digital boards are manufacturer products and follow their own terms.

Do I need a permit for a drive-through menu board?

Usually, yes. Illuminated outdoor signs and their structures normally need municipality, free-zone or master-developer approval, and site operators or landlords add their own criteria. We prepare and submit the drawings and confirm the current requirement for your site.

How do we change prices on a static menu board?

Static boards open from the front, so staff can swap printed backlit film panels in minutes. Where prices change more often than items, we design changeable price strips into the panel. We print replacement panels in our factory when the menu changes.

Can the drive-through menu be in Arabic and English?

Yes, and most are. Two scripts double the text, so we reduce the number of items rather than shrinking the type, keeping prices and combo names large in both languages. Our designers check spelling and balance at full size before printing.

Can you add a drive-through to an existing restaurant?

Often, if the site has room for a lane, a queue and a pickup window. We survey the plot, check turning space and power routes, and design the boards and foundations around the existing surfaces. We install across all seven emirates, and the survey is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.
