FAQSuspended Lightboxes questions we are asked most
How are hanging light box signs fixed to the ceiling?
They are fixed to the building structure above, usually a concrete slab or steel beam, with mechanical anchors or beam clamps. Wire ropes or rods drop from there to the box. In suspended ceilings the wires pass through small holes or a trim plate in the tile, which carries no load at all.
How heavy can a suspended lightbox be?
Most indoor suspended boxes weigh 5 to 25 kg. Heavier signs are possible, but they need larger anchors, more suspension points and the slab capacity confirmed with your project team or main contractor at survey. We design to keep weight down, and the weight appears on our shop drawing so the landlord's engineer can check it.
Can hanging lightboxes be double-sided?
Yes, and most are, because people approach from both directions. Both faces carry graphics, lit from a shared source inside. Edge-lit double-sided boxes can be as thin as 40 to 60 mm while staying even on both faces, which keeps them light and discreet when seen edge-on.
How do you get power to a hanging sign?
A flexible cable runs down beside one suspension wire, or inside a rod, from an outlet or junction box in the ceiling, and the driver normally sits above the ceiling. If there is no power nearby, our electrician adds a spur, ideally switched with the store lighting so the signs go off at closing.
Can hanging light boxes be used outdoors?
Yes, under canopies, covered walkways and petrol station roofs. Outdoors we use rigid rods or brackets instead of loose wires, because gusts make wire-hung boxes swing. The box, LEDs and driver are outdoor-rated, and the canopy is checked for wind uplift as well as the sign's weight.
Do hanging signs need approval in a mall?
Usually, yes. Malls typically ask for shop drawings showing size, weight, fixings and suspension, and their fire consultant may check the position against sprinklers and detectors. We prepare the submission, answer any comments and schedule the work within the mall's permitted hours, which usually means after trading ends.
Why does my hanging sign keep turning?
Almost always it is air from a nearby diffuser pushing on a box hung from two wires. Converting to four-point suspension, fitting rigid rods or moving the sign away from the airflow solves it. It is a small job, and we can usually do it in one visit without removing the box.
How do I maintain a hanging lightbox?
Dust the top edges every couple of months, as they look grey from below. Once a year, check that grippers have not slipped, wires are not frayed and the safety wire is still attached. If a ladder or display ever hits the sign, have the fixings checked before switching it back on.
