Mall Directional Signage for Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman & Abu Dhabi

Bayan Signage fabricates and installs mall directional signage: suspended signs over corridors, lit directionals at escalator heads, car park transition signs and facility signs for prayer rooms and washrooms. We build to each mall's design manual in our Ajman factory, test every lit sign at full brightness, and install on night shifts around trading hours.

Mall Directional Signs in the UAE

Mall directional signage that holds its own

Mall directional signage is the system of hanging, wall-mounted and freestanding signs that guides shoppers to facilities, zones, entrances and car parks inside a shopping centre. It competes with the most visually aggressive environment in any building: shopfronts, digital screens, promotions and lighting all designed to pull attention. A directional has to be found by someone looking for it without shouting at everyone else. Mall operators, facility managers and fit-out consultants commission it for new malls, extensions and refurbishments.

Good mall systems rely on consistent shape, position and colour rather than size. Once a shopper has spotted the first washroom sign, they should recognise the next one from 40 m away without reading it. That consistency is a manufacturing problem as much as a design one: every panel must match in colour, light output and height across hundreds of signs, often made in several batches. In our Ajman factory we CNC-cut, print and assemble each batch to the same drawings, and run every lit sign at full brightness before dispatch.

Bayan Signage has run its own factory in Ajman since 2016, as the production arm of Bayan Advertising, which has 15 years in the UAE market. Our draftsmen are used to mall design manuals, landlord submissions and night-shift method statements, and our installation crews work across all seven emirates. More than 500 clients, including national retail groups and international brands, have worked with us, and we plan every mall job around how tight a handover window can be.

Our process

How we deliver mall directional signage from our Ajman factory

  1. Survey and decision-point mapping

We walk every route at trading and quiet times, mark junctions, escalator heads and car park transitions, and check ceiling build-up and services above each sign position.

  2. Design to the mall manual

Designers apply the mall's fonts, colours and pictograms, set Arabic and English at equal weight, and check views from upper floors and escalators in atriums.

  3. Shop drawings and approval

Draftsmen produce shop drawings, suspension details and a message schedule for the landlord and facility team, including clearance from sprinklers and exit signs.

  4. Fabrication and light testing

Panels are CNC-routed, powder-coated and printed or vinyl-applied. Lit signs are wired with branded LED modules and run at full brightness to check evenness.

  5. Batch inspection

Every sign is checked against the schedule for message, arrow direction, colour and light output, then labelled by location and packed for night delivery.

  6. Night-shift installation

Our crews install after trading hours under the mall's permit to work, with towers or scissor lifts, and leave each area clean before opening.

Expert advice

Advice from our mall projects team

Mall wayfinding problems repeat from centre to centre. These are the points we raise with operators and consultants before the first drawing.

Hang for the crowd, not the ceiling

Suspended signs usually work best with their bottom edge 2.5 to 3 m above the floor: high enough to clear crowds and trolleys, low enough to stay in the shopper's field of view. Hanging a sign just below a 6 m ceiling puts it above the eye line of everyone except people on the escalator. In low corridors under 3 m, switch to wall-mounted or projecting signs.

Point to facilities, not tenants

Directionals should point to zones, anchors, entrances, car parks and facilities. Listing individual shops creates constant changes as tenants come and go, and gives some tenants an unfair advantage. Shop names belong on the directory. A clean directional with five pictograms does more work than one listing twelve brand names.

Check the view from every level

Signs hung in an atrium are seen from three or four floors and from moving escalators. A sign that reads perfectly from the ground floor can be edge-on, backlit by a skylight or hidden by a balustrade from above. We check sightlines from upper floors and escalators, not only from the floor where the sign hangs.

Give prayer rooms full prominence

Routes to male and female prayer rooms and ablution areas are among the most used in any UAE mall, especially on Fridays and during Ramadan. They should be signed with the same prominence as washrooms, with clear pictograms and Arabic text, and repeated at every decision point on the way.

Sign the car park transition

The point where a family comes up from basement level 2 into the mall is where wayfinding most often breaks down. People need to know which zone they have entered and how to get back to their car. A sign at the lift lobby showing the zone name, and a matching sign inside the car park, solves most lost-car calls to security.

Pricing

Mall directional signage price in Dubai: what affects the cost

We quote mall projects from the sign schedule and the mall's design manual. Send the manual, the floor plans with sign positions and any existing sign details, and we usually return an itemised quote within 24 hours.

Number and size of signs

Repeating a small number of sign types across the mall keeps the cost of each sign down and simplifies future replacements.

Illumination

Lit directionals need LEDs, drivers and a power supply at each position, which adds materials and electrical coordination.

Profiles and finishes

Standard rectangular boxes are the most economical; curved, trimless and custom-shaped panels need more fabrication time.

Suspension and ceiling type

Fixing to an exposed slab is quicker than working above a gypsum ceiling, where access panels or reinforcement may be needed.

Night-shift installation

Work outside trading hours, with access equipment and permits to work, affects labour cost more than the signs themselves.

Phasing

Large malls are often signed zone by zone, and each phase adds mobilisation and coordination with the operator.

Approvals

Mall directional signage approvals and fire rules

Almost every major UAE mall has its own signage manual covering fonts, colours, heights and sometimes approved suppliers, and directionals go through the landlord's approval before fabrication. Hanging signs must also not obstruct sprinklers, smoke detectors or the view of emergency exit signs, which is usually checked against Dubai Civil Defence or the relevant emirate's fire requirements during the mall's approval process.

Where a mall follows the Dubai Universal Design Code, directionals are expected to have strong contrast, clear pictograms and accessible routes signed to the same standard as main routes. Our draftsmen prepare shop drawings and suspension details for the facility team and coordinate with their fire consultant. Requirements vary by mall and emirate, so we confirm them for your project.

FAQ

Mall Directional Signs questions we are asked most

How much does mall directional signage cost in Dubai?

The cost depends on the number and size of signs, whether they are lit, the profile and finish, the ceiling type and night-shift installation. A set of unlit wall directionals for a community mall costs far less than lit suspended signs across a regional mall's atriums. Send the design manual and floor plans, and we will send an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

How long does a mall signage project take?

Timing depends on the number of signs, the lighting and the landlord's review, and we give you a realistic schedule with the quote. Fabrication starts once the landlord approves the shop drawings. Installation is planned on night shifts, zone by zone. Landlord approval is often the longest step, so we prepare drawings early and keep the message schedule up to date.

How high should hanging mall signs be?

Most suspended directionals in UAE malls hang with their bottom edge between 2.5 and 3 m above the finished floor. That clears crowds and trolleys while keeping the sign in the shopper's line of sight. The mall's design manual may set its own height, and atriums and escalator heads often need individual checks.

Should mall directional signs be illuminated?

Not always. In bright corridors, well-contrasted unlit signs can work well. In food courts, darker corridors and car park entrances, or where signs compete with lit shopfronts and screens, illuminated directionals are much easier to find. We often mix both, lighting key signs at major junctions and using unlit panels elsewhere.

Hanging signs or digital screens for mall wayfinding?

They complement each other. Static directionals are reliable, need little maintenance and work during power or network outages. Digital screens and touch directories, which we supply and install using manufacturer screens, suit changing information such as events and tenant searches. Most malls use static signs for the main routes and screens at entrances.

Do mall signs need to be in Arabic and English?

Yes. Directionals in UAE malls are expected to carry Arabic and English, with pictograms carrying most of the information. We set both languages at equal visual weight and check the Arabic before any faces are cut, because a mistake repeated across a mall is expensive to correct.

Can you update a wayfinding system you installed?

Yes. For signs we made and installed, we can reface panels, replace damaged signs, add new signs that match the system or convert unlit signs to lit ones, working from our own shop drawings. Our maintenance team also handles LED repairs and cleaning on contract for Bayan Signage wayfinding, so the system stays consistent as tenants and routes change.
