Halo-Lit (Back-Lit) Letters in the UAE

Halo-lit letters: light on the wall, not in your eyes

Halo-lit letters are 3D letters with an opaque face and an open or diffused back, mounted a few centimetres off the wall so LEDs inside shine backwards and draw a soft outline of light around each letter. By day you see crisp metal; at night the face stays dark and the shape glows. Law firms, clinics, jewellers, hotels, residential towers and corporate receptions choose them because they look calm and expensive rather than loud.

A halo sign succeeds or fails on things you cannot see in a render: the wall finish, the stand-off distance, the angle of the modules, the diffusion of the back panel and the gap between neighbouring letters. Get one wrong and the halo looks patchy, chokes against the wall or blurs into its neighbour. We fabricate, wire and light-test every letter at our factory in Alam Square, Industrial Area 2, Ajman, and test unusual walls with a sample letter at night.

Bayan Signage has been fabricating illuminated signs in Ajman since 2016 as the production arm of Bayan Advertising, which has worked in the UAE for 15 years. Our electricians assemble LED modules and drivers in-house, and our installers handle cabling to the driver position as part of the job. National retail groups and international brands are among the 500+ clients we have worked with.

Our process

How we make halo-lit letters in our Ajman factory

  1. Wall survey after dark

We look at the wall finish, colour and texture, the competing light at night and where a driver can sit with access. A dark or glossy wall changes the whole design.

  2. Design and stroke check

Designers size letters for the viewing distance and check that every stroke is wide enough to hold modules. Thin parts and small Arabic dots are adjusted on the proof.

  3. Laser cutting and fabrication

Faces are laser cut, returns are formed and joined, and the seams finished so they vanish at viewing distance. Studs are fixed inside at the agreed stand-off length.

  4. LED layout and burn-in

Modules are angled towards the back and spaced for an even halo. Every letter is run at full brightness in our test area, and unusual walls get a sample letter tested first.

  5. Back panel and quality check

A clear or opal back is sealed in to keep out dust and insects. Each letter is checked against the artwork for size, finish and halo evenness before dispatch.

  6. Installation and night check

The crew fixes the sign from a full-size template, draws cables through to the driver, then returns after dark to check halo evenness and adjust stand-offs where needed.

Expert advice

Advice from our lighting and fabrication team

Halo lighting is the most wall-dependent style we make. These are the points we check before we quote, and the reasons behind them.

Judge the wall before the letters

A halo needs a light, matt surface to land on. Render, painted block, pale stone and light ACP give the strongest glow. Dark grey cladding, black glass and polished granite swallow or mirror the light, and the sign looks flat after dark. On those walls we either add a light backing panel behind the letters or recommend front-lit letters instead, and we tell you which before you spend anything.

Set the stand-off to the letter

Most of our halo letters sit 25 to 50 mm off the wall. Smaller letters and tight logos look best at the lower end, with a crisp outline; large building letters need more distance for the halo to spread. Too tight and the light chokes into a hard line; too far and it fades and the letters look detached. We use studs that allow a few millimetres of adjustment on site.

Give strokes and gaps room

Light needs space inside the letter. We want strokes of at least 20 to 25 mm on illuminated letters, or the halo breaks into dots. Between letters, we keep at least 50 mm so neighbouring halos do not merge into a blur. Fine serif fonts and small Arabic dots are often redrawn slightly or made as unlit details, so the sign still looks intentional.

Size up for a dark face

Because the face is dark at night, a halo sign needs more height than a front-lit one to be read from the same distance. A reception sign seen from 6 to 8 m works at 150 to 250 mm; a clinic fascia read from across a service road usually needs 400 mm or more. If the sign must be read from a highway at night, halo alone is the wrong choice.

Keep the driver cool and reachable

In our experience the LEDs are rarely what fails first on a halo sign; the driver is. Sealed behind plaster on a west-facing wall in August, it cooks. We place drivers in ventilated, shaded boxes sized with headroom, and always plan an access panel. Burying a driver behind finished cladding turns a simple replacement into demolition.

Pricing

Halo-lit letter price in Dubai: what affects the cost

Each sign is costed from its drawing, so there is no fixed price list. Send the logo, wall size and a daytime and night photo, and we will send an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

Letter height and perimeter

Cost follows the total perimeter more closely than the character count. Ten large letters can cost more than twenty small ones.

Face material and finish

Painted aluminium is the most economical. 316 stainless, mirror polish, PVD colours and brass each add material and finishing cost.

Font and logo complexity

Tight curves, thin strokes and Arabic dots take more cutting, forming and finishing time than simple block letters.

LED density and depth

Deeper letters and denser modules give a stronger halo but use more metal and more LEDs.

Wall and backing

A light backing panel for a dark wall, or a hidden frame for glass and cladding, adds material and installation time.

Access, power and permits

Night work, boom lifts, long cable runs to power and authority approvals all affect the installation line.

Approvals

Halo-lit letter permits and landlord criteria in the UAE

Outdoor halo-lit signs usually need approval from Dubai Municipality or the relevant free-zone authority, such as DMCC, JAFZA or TECOM, and from Sharjah or Ajman municipality in those emirates. Malls and master communities often add criteria on letter depth, colour temperature and lighting hours, which can affect the stand-off and LED choice.

Interior reception signs normally need only landlord or building management approval. Our draftsmen prepare the drawings and specification for either route and check the Arabic and English wording against your licence. Requirements vary by location and change, so we confirm them for your exact site before fabrication.

FAQ

Halo-Lit (Back-Lit) Letters questions we are asked most

How much do halo-lit letters cost in Dubai?

It depends on letter height and perimeter, face material, LED density, the wall and access. A brushed aluminium reception logo is a modest job; a long 316 stainless name on a high facade costs far more. Send your logo, sizes and photos and we will send an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

What is the difference between halo-lit and front-lit letters?

Halo-lit letters light the wall behind them while their faces stay dark; front-lit letters glow through a translucent acrylic face. Halo lighting looks softer and more premium, while front lighting is brighter and easier to read from far away. Front and back-lit letters combine both.

How far should halo-lit letters stand off the wall?

Usually 25 to 50 mm. A smaller gap gives a tight, intense outline; a larger one gives a wider, softer halo but can look detached. The right distance depends on letter size, LED brightness and wall finish, which is why we use adjustable studs and check the result after dark.

Can halo-lit letters be installed on glass or a dark wall?

Yes, but the halo needs something to land on. On clear glass, light passes straight through, so we fit a backing panel or frosted film behind the letters. On dark or glossy walls, a light backing panel does the same job. Fixing to glass also needs bonding or a frame rather than drilled studs.

Are halo-lit letters suitable for outdoor use in the UAE?

Yes, when built for it: sealed back panels, IP65 LED modules, drivers in shaded ventilated boxes and 316 stainless near the coast. The letters themselves handle heat well. Most outdoor failures we are called to come from drivers mounted in hot, sealed spaces, which is why we design against it.

Can a halo be a colour other than white?

Yes. Modules come in warm, neutral and cool white, single colours, and RGB that changes colour. White halos are the most popular because they look clean on any wall. Coloured halos work best on white or very light surfaces, and some malls and communities restrict colour-changing effects.

How long do halo-lit letters last?

Well-built letters typically give ten years or more of service. The LED modules we use are rated for around 50,000 hours, and outdoor letters carry our 5-year warranty on LEDs, finish and structure. Drivers in hot, unventilated positions are the part most likely to need replacing early.

What if one halo-lit letter goes dark?

Each letter is wired separately, so the fault is usually a single LED string or connector, which we repair without taking down the rest of the sign. We record driver locations at handover, keep the drawings for the signs we make and can remake a single letter to match if it is ever damaged.
