Backlit Reception Signs in the UAE

Backlit reception signs that suit the room

A backlit reception sign is a logo or company name behind the reception desk that carries its own light: halo-lit metal letters washing the wall, acrylic letters with glowing faces, an edge-lit acrylic panel with a printed or CNC-cut mark, or a slim lit panel. It is usually the first thing a visitor sees from the lift doors. Law firms, banks, clinics, technology companies, hotels and showrooms use one to make the space look finished, including after hours when the overhead lights are dimmed.

Reception lighting is a different problem from shopfront lighting. Outside, a sign competes with sunlight. Inside, it competes with downlights, a glazed entrance and a receptionist sitting a metre and a half in front of it all day. The right sign is usually dimmer than people expect, matched to the colour temperature of the ceiling, and placed so its brightest part sits above head height. We fit dimmable drivers as standard and set the level on site, in daylight and again in the evening.

Bayan Signage is the production arm of Bayan Advertising, which has worked in the UAE for 15 years, and our factory in Ajman has been fabricating signs since 2016. Stainless and acrylic letters are laser-cut and CNC-routed in-house, LEDs are assembled and tested by our own electricians, and our designers check every logo at production size. More than 500 clients across the UAE, including national retail groups and international brands, have worked with us.

Our process

How we make a backlit reception sign in our Ajman factory

  1. Wall and lighting survey

We measure the wall, note the finish, the ceiling downlights and any glazing, and find where cables can enter. The survey is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.

  2. Design on a photo of your reception

Our designers set the logo size, lighting style and colour temperature on a photo of the actual wall, and mark the cable entry and driver position for your fit-out contractor.

  3. Fit-out coordination

We agree the backing plate, conduit and driver location with your contractor at first-fix stage, so nobody has to cut a finished feature wall later.

  4. Cutting, forming and finishing

Stainless faces are laser-cut, acrylic CNC-routed to ±0.1 mm, returns formed and finishes applied. Edge-lit panels are cut to size and their edges polished for clean light entry.

  5. LED fitting and dimming test

LEDs are fitted, sealed letter backs keep dust out, and every sign is run at full brightness and through its dimming range in our test area before sign-off.

  6. Installation and light setting

We fix the sign with a full-size template, connect the dimmable driver and set the brightness on site, then return in the evening if needed to fine-tune it.

Expert advice

Advice from our interiors team

Indoor signs go wrong for different reasons from outdoor ones. These are the points we raise with clients and fit-out contractors on reception projects.

Size for the lift doors, not the desk

Visitors usually first see the logo from the lift or entrance, 6 to 12 m away. A logo 900 to 1,500 mm wide, or letters 150 to 300 mm tall, fills that view without crowding the desk. Leave at least 300 mm of clear wall above the desk top and about 600 mm either side, and centre the logo on the wall rather than the desk if the two do not line up.

Match the colour temperature to the ceiling

Most offices use 4,000 K downlights, so a 4,000 K sign looks intentional. Warm 3,000 K suits wood, brass, beige stone and hospitality interiors. Cool 6,500 K beside warm downlights looks like a mistake, and photographs make it worse. We ask for the lighting schedule or check the downlights at the survey before choosing the LEDs.

Keep halos for light walls

Dark veneer, black paint and glossy marble swallow a halo, so the logo looks unlit. If the wall must stay dark, choose face-lit letters or put a light backing panel behind the logo. Gloss surfaces also reflect the LED dots, so on polished stone we increase the stand-off gap and use a denser diffuser.

Plan the cable before the wall is closed

Most reception sign problems come from the sign arriving after the feature wall is finished, leaving surface cables or a cut panel. In Dubai and Abu Dhabi fit-outs we agree the cable entry point, backing plate and driver location with the contractor during first-fix, and send a setting-out drawing so the conduit lands exactly behind the logo.

Always fit a dimmer

A sign that looks right at 7 pm can look harsh at 10 am, and a receptionist sitting under it all day will notice. We size drivers with about 20% headroom and fit a dimmer matched to the office lighting controls. Setting the level on site, in daylight and in the evening, is the single most useful step on any indoor sign.

Pricing

Backlit reception sign price in Dubai: what affects the cost

Send us your logo file, the wall width and a photo of the reception, and tell us the fit-out stage. You receive an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours, with fabrication, installation and any electrical work listed separately.

Size and number of letters

Each letter is fabricated and lit separately, so a long name costs more than a compact logo of the same width.

Face material and finish

Brushed stainless and standard acrylic are the most economical. Mirror, PVD gold or black finishes and colour-matched acrylic add cost.

Lighting style

Halo or face lighting alone is simplest. Front-and-back-lit letters and edge-lit panels with layered printing need more modules and work.

Backing panel

A timber, metal or acrylic panel behind the logo adds material and fixing work, and is sometimes the only way to make a halo work.

Controls

A simple dimmer is standard; 0 to 10 V, DALI or building management integration add drivers and coordination.

Fit-out stage

Installing during first-fix is simplest. Retrofitting to a finished wall can need concealed cable routes and careful making good.

Approvals

Backlit reception sign approvals in towers and business parks

Indoor reception signs rarely need a municipality permit, but towers, business parks and free-zone buildings usually want drawings for anything fixed to walls, especially with electrical work. Building management may also ask for a method statement, the installers' details and out-of-hours access. We prepare the drawing and method statement and confirm the requirement with your building before the work is booked.

Electrical work is the other point of control. The sign's driver must be connected by a qualified electrician to a suitable circuit, and many buildings require their own maintenance team to witness the connection or isolate the circuit. Our electricians handle the connection, and where the fit-out contractor holds the electrical works, we coordinate with them so the logo is wired once and correctly.

Designers who check at full size

Every logo is checked at production size on a photo of your wall, including Arabic names with fine strokes and dots.

FAQ

Backlit Reception Signs questions we are asked most

How much does a backlit reception sign cost in Dubai?

It depends on size, the number of letters, face material and finish, the lighting style, any backing panel and the controls. Brushed stainless halo letters for a short name cost far less than a large PVD logo with front and back lighting on a feature panel. Send your logo and a wall photo for an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

Do backlit reception signs need a dedicated power point?

They need a supply, but rarely a new circuit. A typical indoor logo draws very little power, so it can usually run from the reception lighting circuit or a fused spur near the driver, which also means it switches off with the lights. What matters is that the driver stays reachable and that an electrician makes the connection.

Can a backlit logo be dimmed?

Yes, as long as the driver is dimmable and the dimmer type matches. We supply triac, 0 to 10 V or DALI dimmable drivers depending on how the office lighting is controlled. Dimming is the most useful feature on an indoor sign, because the right brightness is almost always lower than full output.

What colour temperature should a reception sign use?

Most offices suit 4,000 K neutral white, which matches standard LED downlights. Warm 3,000 K works better with wood, brass, beige stone and hospitality interiors. Cool 6,500 K is rarely right indoors. If your logo has a strong brand colour, coloured LEDs or a coloured acrylic face can carry it instead.

Is halo lighting or face lighting better indoors?

Halo lighting suits a calm, premium look on a light wall; face lighting suits a logo whose colour must glow, or a dark wall. Halo letters keep a metal face that also looks good switched off. Face-lit acrylic shows the brand colour strongly but can feel bright in a small room unless it is dimmed.

Can a backlit sign be fixed to a glass partition?

Yes, but rarely directly. Clear glass gives the light nothing to land on and shows every cable and fixing behind it. We usually mount the logo on a solid backing panel clamped or bonded to the glass, or use an edge-lit acrylic panel with a small, discreet cable entry at the top or bottom.

How long does a backlit reception sign take to make?

The fabrication programme is confirmed with your quote once artwork, finish and lighting style are known, and PVD colours add a step. The bigger risk to the date is the fit-out programme, so order early enough that fixings and cables go in before the wall is finished.

Can you repair or update an existing reception sign?

Usually, yes. Failed LEDs or drivers can be replaced, faces refinished and letters rearranged after a rebrand or merger. We inspect the sign and the wiring, then tell you whether repair or a new logo is the better value. See our LED sign repair service for existing signs.
