Emergency Exit Signs in the UAE

Exit signs that form a complete escape route

Exit signs show the way out, step by step, from wherever a person is standing to a place of safety. That makes them a chain, not a single sign over the final door: the green ISO 7010 running figure with a door, an arrow saying left, right, ahead or down the stair, and a short Arabic and English legend. Building owners, fit-out contractors, hotel and school operators and facility managers in Dubai order them for new buildings, refits and Civil Defence inspections.

Where exit signage goes wrong is rarely the print. It is the arrow pointing at a wall because one direction was ordered for the whole floor, the running figure facing away from its arrow, the sign hidden behind a new meeting pod, or a photoluminescent sign in a stair that is too dark to charge it. We set each location's arrow on the plan, code the back of every directional sign to match, and install route by route so mistakes show immediately.

Bayan Signage has manufactured signs in its Ajman factory since 2016 as the production arm of Bayan Advertising, with 15 years in the UAE market. Our technical draftsmen work on Dubai Civil Defence submissions as part of their routine, and our installers are used to occupied hotels, malls and hospitals where work happens at night. Exit signs are a product where one wrong sign does more harm than a missing one, so we treat the schedule seriously.

Our process

How we deliver exit signs from our Ajman factory

  1. Route drawings or walk-through

We work from the fire consultant's escape route drawings. Where none exist or the layout has changed, we walk every route from the furthest room to the final exit and mark each sign position.

  2. Sign schedule with arrows

Our draftsmen produce a schedule listing every location, arrow direction, size, format and legend. Each directional sign gets a code that is printed on its back and marked on the plan.

  3. Printing on glow material

Signs are printed with UV-stable inks onto photoluminescent PVC, aluminium with glow film or self-adhesive door vinyl, then CNC-routed or laser-cut to size.

  4. Darkness test and check

Photoluminescent signs are charged and checked in darkness for an even glow. Every sign is checked against the schedule for arrow direction, figure orientation and wording before packing.

  5. Installation in walking order

Our crew installs route by route, checking from each sign that the next is visible. Door signs are bonded on fire doors, and hung signs clear sprinkler heads and diffusers.

  6. Handover and walk-back

We walk each route back with your facilities team, then hand over a marked-up plan showing every sign, its code and its location for future audits and refits.

Expert advice

Advice from our escape route team

Exit signs are read under stress, often in poor light, by people who do not know the building. These are the rules we apply on every route.

An upward arrow means straight ahead

Many buyers read an up arrow as 'go upstairs'. On an exit sign it normally means continue forwards. Stair directions use diagonal arrows: down and to the side where the route descends a stair. Because this catches so many people out, we confirm the arrow for every location against the route drawing before anything is printed, and never ship a box of identical arrows.

Always see the next sign

On a straight corridor, the next sign should be visible from the one before it, which in practice often means every 15 to 25 m depending on corridor shape and ceiling height. Every turn, every door on the route and every stair landing gets its own sign. Walk the route from the furthest desk with the plan in hand and the gaps become obvious.

Sign the doors that are not exits

In a panic, a plant room, cleaner's cupboard or dead-end store looks just like an exit. A clear 'Not an exit' sign on those doors stops people losing precious seconds at the wrong one. Hotel guest floors and mall service corridors are where we add these most, because people there do not know the layout.

Size from the longest sight line

A sign read from 20 m needs a pictogram roughly twice the height of one read from 10 m. We use 150 x 300 mm for short corridors, 200 x 400 mm for typical office and hotel floors and 300 x 600 mm or larger in warehouses, car parks and atriums, choosing per zone rather than one size for the building.

Re-walk the routes after every fit-out

New partitions, display screens, banners and shelving go up in front of existing exit signs more often than anyone admits. After any layout change, walk the routes again. A sign that was correct last year may now point into a meeting room, and the fix is usually a few new or moved signs, not a new schedule.

Pricing

Exit signs price in Dubai: what affects the cost

We price exit signage from the route schedule. Send the escape route drawings or floor plans, the glow requirement and your inspection date, and you will usually receive an itemised quote within 24 hours.

Number of route signs

Most of the cost sits in directional signs along the route, not the final door. A floor with many turns needs far more signs than its area suggests.

Glow performance

Higher-performance photoluminescent grades cost more but glow brighter for longer. We usually reserve them for stair cores, basements and long routes.

Mounting format

Flat wall signs are simplest. Ceiling-hung double-sided signs need rods and fixings and take longer above suspended ceilings full of services.

Arrow variants

Each arrow direction and size is a separate artwork. Six arrow variants in three sizes cost more to produce than two, even at the same total quantity.

Site conditions

Occupied hotels, hospitals and malls often restrict working hours, and high atriums need access equipment, which affects installation more than the signs.

Approvals

Civil Defence requirements for exit signs in the UAE

Exit signage is part of the fire and life safety design that Dubai Civil Defence and the other emirates' civil defence authorities review and inspect under the UAE Fire and Life Safety Code. The consultant's drawings normally define sign positions and whether each location needs photoluminescent signs, illuminated emergency luminaires or both. Malls, free zones and landlords may add their own fit-out rules on top.

Illuminated exit luminaires are normally approved fire safety products supplied and wired by a licensed fire or MEP contractor; our work covers the photoluminescent, printed and directional signs around them, matched in wording and symbols. Requirements depend on building use and occupancy and are updated periodically, so we confirm the current expectation for your building before producing the schedule.

Why Bayan Signage

Why businesses choose Bayan Signage for exit signs

Every arrow decided on the plan

Our draftsmen assign an arrow and code to each location, so no sign is installed by guesswork and none points at a wall.

Glow tested before dispatch

Photoluminescent signs are charged and checked in darkness in our Ajman factory, and each batch is signed off against the approved schedule.

Civil Defence experience

Our technical team prepares Dubai Civil Defence submissions routinely, so escape route drawings and inspection expectations are familiar ground.

Night work in live buildings

Our crews install in occupied hotels, malls and hospitals around operating hours, across all seven emirates, with site safety rules followed.

Coordinated with your contractors

We match legends and symbols to the fire or MEP contractor's illuminated fittings, so the building reads as one system.

Records you can audit

A marked-up plan with sign codes is handed over, which makes the next refit or inspection a straightforward check.

FAQ

Emergency Exit Signs questions we are asked most

How much do exit signs cost in Dubai?

It depends on the number of route signs, the glow grade, the mounting format and site access. A small office with a few corridors costs far less than a hotel with hundreds of directional and ceiling-hung signs. Send us your escape route drawings or floor plans and we will send an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

Are photoluminescent exit signs accepted in Dubai?

In many locations, yes. Photoluminescent signs are widely used along escape routes and stairs in UAE buildings because they stay visible during a power failure without wiring. Some areas may need illuminated emergency signs instead or as well, depending on the fire design, so the consultant's drawings and Civil Defence review decide where each type goes.

Should exit signs say 'Exit' or 'Fire exit'?

Either can be used with the standard running figure, which does most of the work. What matters more is consistency across the building and matching Arabic and English wording. Your fire consultant or the landlord's design criteria may prefer one, so we follow their specification where there is one.

Can exit signs be fixed to fire doors?

Yes, with care. Fire doors are certified assemblies, and drilling the leaf can affect the rating. We normally bond signs with a suitable adhesive or use self-adhesive photoluminescent vinyl, and only use mechanical fixings where the door manufacturer allows them.

Do you supply illuminated emergency exit lights?

Our focus is the signs: photoluminescent, printed and directional signs, door signs and their installation. Illuminated exit luminaires are normally approved fire safety products supplied and wired by the fire or MEP contractor. We coordinate with them so wording, arrows and symbols match.

How often should exit signs be checked?

At every routine fire safety check and after any change to the layout. Look for signs that are blocked, damaged, faded or now pointing the wrong way. A simple test for photoluminescent signs is to switch off the lights for a minute after a normal working day and confirm every sign glows clearly.

How long do photoluminescent exit signs last?

Indoors, photoluminescent exit signs usually perform well for ten years or more. Dirt, scratching and constant direct sun can reduce their glow sooner. Clean them with a damp cloth and mild detergent, avoid solvent sprays, and replace any sign that no longer glows clearly after charging.

Do you install exit signs across the UAE?

Yes. We manufacture in Ajman and install exit signage in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. The site visit is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.
