Evacuation Plan Boards in the UAE

An evacuation plan a stranger can read in ten seconds

An evacuation plan is a simplified floor map with one job: to show the person standing in front of it how to get out. It marks 'You are here', draws the escape route in bold green arrows to the nearest exits and stairs, and shows the extinguishers, alarm call points, hose reels and assembly point along the way, with a short bilingual instruction block. Hotels, offices, schools, hospitals, malls and residential towers in Dubai and across the UAE fix them at lift lobbies, stair doors and on the back of hotel room doors.

Most of the skill is in the drawing, not the frame. A shrunken architectural plan with a red dot added is unreadable at arm's length: hundreds of fine lines, room numbers and gridlines bury the route. A good plan is rotated so that what lies ahead of the viewer is at the top, leaves out everything that does not help someone escape, and makes the route arrows the heaviest element on the page. Our draftsmen do that editing in-house, then our factory prints and frames the result.

Bayan Signage has worked from its Ajman factory since 2016 as the production arm of Bayan Advertising, which has 15 years in the UAE. Our technical draftsmen already prepare shop drawings and Civil Defence signage layouts for exit, fire and evacuation signs, so they read fire and life safety drawings every week. That experience is what lets us turn a dense CAD file into a set of oriented plans that a hotel guest, visitor or contractor can follow in the dark.

Our process

How we draw and make evacuation plan boards in Ajman

  1. Drawings and location list

We collect the approved fire drawings or current CAD plans and agree a list of board positions with your facilities team or fire consultant. Each position becomes its own plan.

  2. Site walk at each position

We stand where each board will hang to confirm orientation, door swings and the route actually available, because refits often leave drawings out of date. The visit is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.

  3. Redrawing, route first

Our draftsmen draw the escape route first, then add only the walls, doors, stairs and equipment the reader needs. The plan is rotated to the viewer and the legend set in both languages.

  4. Proofs and approval

You receive a proof of every plan with its location code. The fire consultant or facilities manager marks any changes, and nothing is printed until each plan is signed off.

  5. Printing, covers and frames

Plans are printed on our large-format printers, laminated, and fitted behind CNC-cut acrylic covers or into frames, each labelled with its location code and revision date.

  6. Installation and final check

Our crew fixes each board at the agreed height with tamper-resistant fixings or bonding on doors, then checks the arrows and you are here marker against the floor before leaving.

Expert advice

Advice from our draftsmen

These are the points that decide whether an evacuation plan helps someone get out. They cost nothing at the drawing stage and a full reprint if they are missed.

One orientation per position

Printing a single north-up plan for every board on a floor forces people to rotate the map mentally while an alarm is sounding. Each board should be drawn so that the direction the reader faces is at the top. On a typical office floor with two lift lobbies and four stair doors, that means six different plans, even though they look similar. It adds drawing time and saves real seconds.

Leave out most of the architecture

Furniture, room names, gridlines and dimensions belong on the architect's drawing, not the evacuation plan. We usually end up with less than half the line work of a traced plan. The route arrows should be the boldest thing on the page, followed by exits and stairs, then equipment. If the reader cannot find their route on a proof in ten seconds, the plan needs more editing.

Tell people not to use the lifts

Under stress people head for the way they came in, which is usually the lift. Mark the stairs clearly, show the lift as a crossed-out symbol or a note, and add 'In case of fire do not use the lifts' in Arabic and English. On ground floors, show the route from the exit to the numbered assembly point outside.

Size by complexity, not distance

Plans are read from about 0.5 to 1.5 m, so size depends on how much of the floor must be shown clearly. A3 suits hotel doors, A2 suits typical office floors and A1 suits large, complex areas. Keep legend text at least 3 to 4 mm high on A3. For malls, hospitals or warehouses, split the floor into zones rather than printing a giant board nobody can read.

Build in the next refit

UAE offices and shops are refitted often, and an old plan that sends people to a closed door is worse than none. We print a location code and revision date on every plan and use frames that take a replaceable insert, so an update is a print job rather than a new board. Treat any change to walls, doors or fire equipment as a trigger to review the plans.

Pricing

Evacuation plan price in Dubai: what affects the cost

Every evacuation plan job is priced from the drawings and the number of positions. Send your floor plans, a list of board locations and any consultant requirements, and you will usually have an itemised quote within 24 hours.

Drawing work

Redrawing and simplifying the floor plan is usually the largest cost. Clean CAD files save significant time compared with scanned PDFs or a building with no reliable drawings.

Number of unique views

Each position needs its own orientation and you are here marker. A hotel with several room layouts needs many unique plans, even if they look alike.

Print media

Standard UV-resistant print is the most economical. Photoluminescent media and anti-glare covers add material cost.

Frame and fixing

Snap frames cost least. Stand-off acrylic panels, tamper-resistant fixings and custom frames matched to an interior cost more per board.

Approval rounds

Plans often pass through the fire consultant and facilities manager. Agreeing content early keeps revision rounds, and drawing time, to a minimum.

Site survey needs

Where drawings no longer match the building, we survey the floor before drawing, which adds time but avoids plans that show doors that are not there.

Approvals

Evacuation plan requirements and Civil Defence checks

Evacuation plans are commonly reviewed during Dubai Civil Defence inspections and fire safety audits, and by the civil defence authorities in other emirates. The UAE Fire and Life Safety Code and the building's approved fire strategy usually set what the plans must show, and the expected detail varies with building use and occupancy. We prepare plans from the approved fire drawings and confirm the current expectations for your building.

Where the Dubai Universal Design Code applies, mounting height, contrast and readability matter as well, so plans should be readable by wheelchair users and people with reduced vision. Hotels, malls and managed towers may also have their own design criteria for frames and fixings. We keep contrast high and text sizes generous, and check any landlord or operator standard before production.

Why Bayan Signage

Why building managers choose Bayan Signage for evacuation plans

Draftsmen who read fire drawings

Our technical draftsmen prepare Civil Defence signage layouts and shop drawings, so they interpret fire strategies and escape routes correctly from the start.

Every plan oriented on site

We stand at each board position before drawing, so the plan matches what the reader actually sees, not what an old drawing suggests.

Bilingual layouts by design

Arabic and English legends are planned together, with space for both scripts, rather than squeezing Arabic in after the English is finished.

Printed and framed in-house

Printing, laminating, acrylic cutting and assembly all happen in our Ajman factory, which keeps quality consistent across hundreds of plans.

Easy to update

Location codes, revision dates and replaceable inserts mean a layout change becomes a quick reprint of the affected plans only.

One team for the safety set

Exit, fire, assembly point and evacuation plans can be produced and installed together, with one project manager from drawings to handover.

FAQ

Evacuation Plan Boards questions we are asked most

What should an evacuation plan in Dubai include?

Typically a simplified floor plan oriented to the viewer, a clear you are here marker, escape routes to the nearest exits and stairs, fire alarm call points, extinguishers and hose reels, the assembly point, and a bilingual legend using ISO 7010 symbols. The building's fire consultant and Civil Defence requirements set the exact detail for your building, and we confirm them before drawing.

Who prepares the evacuation plan?

Usually the fire consultant defines the escape routes and equipment, and a signage company turns that information into readable boards. We work from the approved fire drawings or current floor plans, then redraw, orient and design each plan. The building owner or facilities manager normally approves the final versions before printing.

How much does an evacuation plan board cost in Dubai?

The cost depends mainly on the drawing work, the number of unique positions, the print media and the frame. A small office with three boards is a modest job; a hotel with many room layouts is a larger drafting project. Send your floor plans and locations and we will send an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

What size should an evacuation plan be?

Commonly A3 for hotel room doors and small offices, A2 for typical office floors and corridors, and A1 for large or complex areas. Plans are read from close range, so the right size depends on how much of the floor must be shown clearly. Splitting very large floors into zones often works better than one huge board.

Do evacuation plans need to be photoluminescent?

Not everywhere, but photoluminescent plans are a sensible choice in stairs, corridors and areas where they may need to be read during a power failure, and some consultants specify them throughout. We check the requirement for your building and can produce the same drawing on standard or photoluminescent media.

How often should evacuation plans be updated?

Whenever walls, doors, exits or fire equipment change, and during regular fire safety reviews. Active office and retail buildings often need updates every few years because of fit-outs. Frames with replaceable inserts mean only the affected plans are reprinted, so the plans never lag behind the building.

Can you make evacuation plans from a PDF floor plan?

Yes. CAD files are fastest, but we can redraw from PDF drawings or scans. Where no reliable drawings exist, we survey the floor to confirm walls, doors and exits before drawing. Any doubt about routes or equipment is checked with your fire consultant or facilities team before anything is printed.

Do you install evacuation plans outside Dubai?

Yes. Plans are drawn and printed in our Ajman factory and installed across Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. The site visit is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman, and for large hotels we install floor by floor to suit housekeeping.
