Channel Letters in the UAE

Channel letter signs, built under one roof

Channel letter signs are the standard for illuminated shopfronts in Dubai and across the UAE: each letter is a hollow metal channel with an acrylic face, LED modules inside and its own fixings, so the sign reads as crisp individual letters by day and glows evenly at night. They suit restaurants, clinics, pharmacies, showrooms, mall units and office towers, and they can carry Arabic and English side by side without the bulk of a lightbox.

What separates a sign that looks good for years from one that flickers by its second summer is mostly invisible: the gap between the LEDs and the face, the gauge of the returns, how the joints are sealed, where the driver sits and how much heat it has to cope with. Because we make every part in our own factory at Alam Square, Industrial Area 2, Ajman, we control each of those decisions rather than passing them to a subcontractor.

Bayan Signage has been fabricating signs in Ajman since 2016 as the production arm of Bayan Advertising, a UAE group with 15 years in the market. Our designers, draftsmen, fabricators, electricians and installers work as one team, so the people who build your sign are the people who fix it to the wall.

Our process

How we make channel letters in our Ajman factory

  1. Site survey and measurement

We measure the fascia, check the wall build-up behind the cladding, locate the power point and photograph the street view. The survey is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.

  2. Scaled design and shop drawing

Our designers set letter heights against the viewing distance and balance the Arabic and English lines. Draftsmen then produce the shop drawing used for both fabrication and the permit.

  3. CNC cutting and return bending

Faces and backs are CNC-routed to ±0.1 mm. Returns are bent to the letter outline and joined so the seams do not show once lit.

  4. LED layout and burn-in test

Modules are spaced to the return depth so the face shows no hot spots, then every letter is run at full brightness in our test area before it is closed.

  5. Finishing and quality check

Returns are powder-coated to your RAL colour. Each letter is checked against the approved artwork for size, colour and light uniformity before dispatch.

  6. Installation and handover

The same crew that built the sign installs it with a full-size template, connects the drivers in an accessible, ventilated position and tests every circuit after dark.

Specification

Channel letter specification: what goes into a Bayan letter

This is the specification we start from on most outdoor jobs. We adjust it to the site, the landlord's design criteria and your budget, and every change is itemised on the quote.

ComponentOur standardUpgrade optionsWhy it matters
ReturnsAluminium, powder-coated to RAL304 or 316 stainless, gold or black PVDReturns carry the colour by day and keep water out; stainless holds its finish longest near the sea.
Face3 to 6 mm UV-stabilised cast acrylicDay/night film, multi-colour faces, polycarbonateCast acrylic diffuses light evenly and resists yellowing in UAE sun.
TrimTrim cap matched to return colourTrimless bonded faceTrim cap is serviceable and economical; trimless gives a cleaner edge.
LED modulesSamsung or Epistar, IP65, 12 V DC24 V for long runs, RGB for colour changeBranded modules keep colour and brightness consistent from letter to letter.

Expert advice

Advice from our estimating team

These are the points we raise most often when we review a new brief. Getting them right at the drawing stage costs nothing; fixing them after installation is expensive.

Size letters for the street, not the screen

A useful rule is about 25 mm of letter height for every 3 m of viewing distance. A ground-floor clinic read from across a service road at 30 m needs capital letters of roughly 250 mm; a tower crown read from a highway needs metres, not millimetres. We mock the sign up on a photo of your actual facade so you see the real proportion before anything is cut.

Watch the stroke width of your logo

Light needs room inside the channel. Below about 20 mm of stroke width an outdoor letter cannot be lit evenly, which is why fine serifs, thin scripts and small Arabic dots are often made as non-illuminated details or slightly redrawn. We flag this on the first proof, not after fabrication.

Ask for the landlord's criteria early

Malls and many Dubai developments fix the maximum depth, the colour temperature, the illumination hours and whether raceways are allowed. A 100 mm depth limit, for example, rules out some constructions entirely. Send us the tenant design criteria with the brief and we design to it from the start.

Plan for heat as well as rain

On a south or west-facing fascia in July, the inside of a closed letter gets far hotter than the air outside. We keep drivers out of the letters, ventilate the driver box and choose modules rated for high ambient temperatures, because heat, not water, is what shortens LED life in the UAE.

Give Arabic its own design, not a translation

Arabic letterforms have different heights, ascenders and dots. Set at the same point size as the English, Arabic looks small and crowded. We size and space both scripts as one composition and check the spelling against your trade licence.

Pricing

Channel letter sign price in Dubai: what affects the cost

We quote every sign from its drawing, so there is no fixed price list. You receive an itemised quotation that separates fabrication, installation and permit work, usually within 24 hours of sending your logo, sizes and a site photo.

Number and height of letters

Each letter is a separate fabricated unit with its own LEDs and wiring, so a long name costs more than a short logo of the same overall width.

Return material and finish

Powder-coated aluminium is the most economical. Stainless steel, brass-look or PVD finishes add material and polishing time.

Lighting style

Front-lit is the simplest. Halo, front-and-back-lit and trimless constructions need more modules and more careful sealing.

Mounting method

Direct fixing is the least material; a raceway, backing panel or steel sub-frame adds cost but can save time on site or protect the facade.

Access and working hours

A ground-floor fascia needs a tower; a high facade needs a boom lift or rope access. Mall night shifts also affect installation cost.

Permits and approvals

We prepare and submit the drawings for Dubai Municipality, Sharjah and Ajman municipalities and free-zone authorities as part of the job.

Approvals

Channel letter permits in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Abu Dhabi

Most outdoor signs need an approval before installation. In Dubai that is usually Dubai Municipality, or the master developer or free-zone authority (such as DMCC, JAFZA, Dubai South or Trakhees) where the building sits in their area. Sharjah and Ajman signs go through the relevant municipality, and malls and managed towers add their own landlord approval on top.

Our technical draftsmen prepare the shop drawings, elevation and specification for the submission, check that the trade name matches your licence in Arabic and English, and follow the application through. Requirements change and vary by location, so we confirm the current rules for your exact address at the survey.

FAQ

Channel Letters questions we are asked most

How much do channel letter signs cost in Dubai?

It depends on the number and height of letters, the return material, the lighting style, mounting and access. A short logo in powder-coated aluminium costs far less than a long bilingual name in stainless steel on a high facade. Send us your logo, the fascia size and a photo, and we will send an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

How long does it take to make channel letters?

Most standard jobs are fabricated in 5 to 10 working days after the design is approved. Permit time is separate and depends on the authority. Large, stainless or trimless jobs take longer, and we give you a realistic programme with the quote rather than an optimistic one.

Do I need a permit for channel letters on my shop in Dubai?

In most cases, yes. Outdoor signs usually need approval from Dubai Municipality or the free-zone or master-developer authority for your area, and malls add their own landlord approval. We prepare the drawings and handle the submission as part of the job, and we confirm the current requirement for your address.

How long do LED channel letters last?

Well-made letters typically give eight to twelve years of service. The LED modules we use are rated for around 50,000 hours, and our outdoor letters carry a 5-year warranty on LEDs, powder coat and structure. Overheated drivers and poor sealing are what shorten their life, which is why we design against both.

What is the difference between channel letters and a lightbox sign?

A lightbox is one illuminated panel with the graphics printed or applied on its face. Channel letters are individual 3D letters, each lit separately, so the wall shows between them. Channel letters look more premium and use less material on long names; lightboxes are cheaper for complex artwork and quick to rebrand.

Can you make channel letters in Arabic?

Yes. Bilingual Arabic and English signs are a large part of our work. We set the Arabic as its own design so it sits equally with the English, and we check the spelling against your trade licence. Very small dots and fine strokes are sometimes made as non-illuminated details so the lit parts stay even.

Do you install channel letters outside Dubai?

Yes. Our crews install across Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah from our factory in Ajman. The site survey is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.

Can damaged channel letters be repaired or replaced individually?

Yes. Each letter is a separate unit, so a broken face, failed LED chain or damaged return can be repaired or remade without replacing the whole sign. We keep the drawings for every sign we make, so a replacement letter matches the original. See our LED sign repair service for existing signs.
