Accessible (Disabled) Parking Signs in the UAE

Disabled parking signs as part of a complete accessible bay

A disabled parking sign looks like the simplest sign in the car park: a blue plate with the white wheelchair symbol, often with 'People of Determination' in Arabic and English. In practice it is one piece of a small system. The vertical sign identifies the bay from the driving aisle, the ground symbol confirms it as the driver turns in, the hatched transfer zone keeps space for a wheelchair or a ramp, and a dropped kerb leads to a step-free route to the door. Inspectors and users judge the whole set.

Most failures we see on site have nothing to do with print quality. A post planted in the middle of the transfer zone. A brand-coloured symbol that nobody recognises. An accessible bay at the far end of a basement, two ramps away from the lift, because it was the space left over. We plan the bay signs, supplementary plates and route signs together from the approved drawings and set each one out against the bay layout, so the bay works for the person using it and passes inspection the first time.

Bayan Signage is the production arm of Bayan Advertising, which has 15 years in the UAE, and our Ajman factory at Alam Square, Industrial Area 2 has made outdoor and wayfinding signs since 2016. Plates are CNC-routed and printed in-house, posts are welded and powder-coated on site, and our draftsmen read accessibility layouts as a routine part of car park work. Outdoor posts and plates carry our 5-year warranty on structure and finish, and developers use our photographed bay records to close accessible parking items at handover.

Our process

How we deliver disabled parking signs from our Ajman factory

  1. Drawings and site check

We take the consultant's accessible parking layout and walk the car park to confirm bay positions, kerbs, the step-free route and where posts can go. The visit is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.

  2. Sign schedule

Our draftsmen list every bay sign, supplementary plate and route sign, with positions dimensioned from fixed points, and flag any bay that sits too far from the entrance or lift.

  3. Plates and posts in the factory

Plates are CNC-routed to ±0.1 mm and printed or faced in reflective film. Galvanised posts are cut, welded and powder-coated, cranked if needed to keep them out of the transfer zone.

  4. Set-out on site

Before fixing, we mark every post and bracket position on site against the bay layout, so the facility manager approves where each sign goes, clear of kerbs, transfer zones and door swings.

  5. Installation

Posts are fixed at the head of each bay using the base detail agreed at survey, column signs are bracketed at one consistent height, and every sign is checked level and clear of ramps.

  6. Inspection photos and handover

Every bay is checked against the schedule and photographed for your file, so the contractor can close accessible parking snag items with evidence.

Specification

Disabled parking sign specification

This is our usual starting specification for an accessible bay. The consultant's drawings and the code that applies to your building take priority, and every change is itemised on the quote.

Expert advice

Advice from our technical draftsmen

Accessible parking is judged by people who rely on it. These are the points our draftsmen check before any sign is made.

Location matters more than the sign

An accessible bay must sit on the shortest step-free route to the entrance or lift. A perfect sign on a bay two ramps away from the lift helps nobody, and inspectors notice. If the drawings place a bay where the route crosses a driving aisle without a dropped kerb, or ends at a step, we raise it with the consultant before fabrication rather than signing a bay that cannot work.

Keep posts out of the transfer zone

A sign post inside the hatched area blocks a wheelchair or a van's side ramp, and it is one of the most common snags we see at handover inspections. We place posts at the head of the bay, use a cranked post or wall bracket where space is tight, and keep at least the full width of the hatched zone clear.

Use the recognised symbol

Redrawn, outline-only or brand-coloured wheelchair symbols may look tidy in a design scheme but are less recognisable and can fail inspection. Keep the standard symbol in white on blue on every bay sign and supplementary plate. Brand colours can go on frames and route signs, never on the symbol plate itself.

Sign the route, not only the bay

In a large mall or hospital car park, a driver needs to know where accessible bays are before reaching them. We add route signs from the entrance and each ramp, typically on columns at about 2 m, with the symbol and an arrow. Without them, the bays are missed and used by others.

Mount for the basement, not the drawing

In basements, columns sit between bays, and a sign on the wrong column reads as belonging to the next space. We set every sign on the column or wall directly at the head of its bay, with the bottom edge at one consistent height, and use reflective film so headlights pick it up as a driver turns down the aisle. Where a duct or sprinkler pipe is in the way, we bracket the plate forward rather than dropping it below the line of sight.

Pricing

Disabled parking sign price in Dubai: what affects the cost

We price from your drawings and the number of bays, not a list. Send the accessible parking layout and photos, and you will usually have an itemised quote, with signs, posts and installation separated, within 24 hours.

Number of bays and route signs

Each bay needs its own vertical sign, and larger sites add route signs at junctions, so the bay and junction count drives the total.

Mounting type

Free-standing posts outside, column brackets in basements and wall fixings each use different hardware and labour, and cranked posts cost more than straight ones.

Supplementary plates

Permit lines, bay numbers and drop-off limits add a plate or print area per bay, priced per sign so you only pay for what the layout needs.

Reflective faces

Reflective film on the vertical sign costs more but keeps the symbol bright in headlights in dark basements and unlit compounds.

Night or phased working

Live car parks often need work in early-morning or out-of-hours slots, with bays coned off in phases, which affects labour cost.

Changes after installation

Moving one of our posts after fixing, because the bay layout changed, means relocating it and making good the old fixing, which costs more than settling positions at survey.

Approvals

Disabled parking codes and inspections in Dubai and the UAE

The Dubai Universal Design Code, and comparable accessibility guidance in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the other emirates, shapes how many accessible bays a building needs, where they go, their size and how they are marked. Requirements vary by building type and emirate, and they are routinely checked at handover and during authority inspections. We work from the consultant's approved drawings and confirm current requirements for your site.

The UAE uses the term People of Determination, and many owners now prefer it on signs alongside the symbol. Misuse of accessible bays is fined by the authorities on public parking and on many private sites, where permit holders display an official card. We agree the exact Arabic and English wording with you, and with the landlord or community if they have a standard.

Why Bayan Signage

Why developers choose Bayan Signage for disabled parking signs

Bays planned as a system

Bay signs, permit plates and route signs are scheduled together from the drawings and set out against the bay layout, so the whole accessible route works.

Draftsmen who check the layout

Our technical draftsmen flag bays that sit off the step-free route or posts that would block a transfer zone, before anything is made.

Snag lists closed with evidence

We photograph every bay we sign against the schedule, so contractors can close accessible parking items at handover without a second visit.

Made in our own factory

Plates, posts and powder coating are produced in Ajman, so every sign on a site matches and replacements are quick.

5-year outdoor warranty

Posts, plates and powder coat on outdoor signs are covered for 5 years, with a warranty document at handover.

One team for the car park

Accessible, reserved, EV, bay number and entrance signs can be produced and installed together, with one project manager.

FAQ

Accessible (Disabled) Parking Signs questions we are asked most

What colour are disabled parking signs in the UAE?

They are normally white on blue, using the International Symbol of Access. The blue background and white symbol are recognised internationally and expected by most design codes and inspectors. Brand colours can be used on route signs or frames, but the symbol plate itself should keep the standard colours and contrast.

How many accessible parking bays does my building need?

The number depends on the total parking, the building type and the code that applies in your emirate. Public buildings, hospitals and malls usually need a higher proportion. Your consultant or the approving authority sets the figure, and we sign every accessible bay shown on the approved drawings.

Should the sign say disabled or People of Determination?

In the UAE, People of Determination is the official term and is increasingly preferred on new signs, usually with the wheelchair symbol and a short Arabic and English line. Some older sites still say disabled parking. We agree the wording with you, and with the landlord if they have a standard.

How much does a disabled parking sign cost in Dubai?

The cost depends on the number of bays, the mounting type, supplementary plates, reflective faces and whether route signs are needed. A single outdoor bay with one post sign is a small job; a mall basement with column signs, route signs and permit plates across several levels is larger. Send your layout and we will quote within 24 hours.

Is a ground marking enough without a vertical sign?

Usually not. Ground symbols are hidden once a car is parked and hard to see from the driving aisle. A vertical sign at the head of the bay makes it identifiable at a distance, and most design guidance expects both. A post sign also survives resurfacing work that wipes out ground markings.

Can you help close accessible parking snags before handover?

Yes, for the accessible bay signs we supply and install. We work from the snag list, adjust our posts out of transfer zones, add any missing route signs and raise signs the inspector finds too low, then photograph each bay so the contractor can close the item. Where a site needs a new compliant set, we make it to the approved drawings.

Can disabled parking signs be used in basements?

Yes. In basements we usually mount the sign on a column or wall at the head of the bay, use reflective film so it shows in headlights, and keep the mounting height the same on every level. Route signs on columns guide drivers from the ramp to the accessible bays.

Do you work across all the emirates?

Yes. We fabricate in Ajman and install across Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. The survey is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman, and we work to the accessibility code and authority that apply in each emirate.
