Petrol Station Price Pylons in the UAE

Petrol station price pylons, read at speed and updated every month

A petrol station price sign is the tall freestanding pylon at the forecourt entrance that shows the fuel brand at the top and the current price of each grade below, such as Super 98, Special 95, E-Plus 91 and Diesel, usually on LED digits, sometimes with panels for the convenience store, car wash or tyre service. It is the first thing a driver sees of the station, often from 200 m away, and for fuel retailers, private stations and site developers it has to work every day of the year.

Two things make a price pylon different from any other sign. UAE fuel prices are announced monthly, so the price display must change quickly and correctly on the first of every month, without a ladder on the forecourt. And the pylon stands next to fuel dispensers, vents and tanks, so its electrics must be placed and rated for a hazardous environment. We weld the structure, build the brand panels and integrate the price modules and controllers in our factory, then test the whole system before it leaves.

Bayan Signage is the production arm of Bayan Advertising, with 15 years in the UAE, and our Ajman factory has welded galvanised steel structures for pylons and totems since 2016. Our technical draftsmen produce the structural plans and authority packages, our electricians handle LED wiring and controls, and our installation crews work under site safety rules on live forecourts.

Our process

How we build petrol station price pylons in our Ajman factory

  1. Site survey and sightlines

We check the approach from both directions, typically 150 to 250 m before the entrance, and mark the pylon position against the forecourt layout, dispensers, tanks, vents and buried services.

  2. Structural and permit drawings

Our draftsmen prepare the pylon elevation and structural plans for wind load, with electrical equipment positioned outside hazardous areas shown on the site's safety drawing. Foundation requirements are confirmed with your project team or main contractor at the survey stage.

  3. Steel welding and cladding

The galvanised steel frame is welded in our steel shop, then clad in ACP or aluminium with lockable access doors for technicians to reach drivers, controllers and module backs.

  4. Brand panel and price modules

Brand panels are built with Samsung or Epistar modules to the retailer's colours. LED price modules and controllers are integrated and wired by our electricians, then tested with repeated updates and power restarts.

  5. Erection and wiring

We supply an anchor bolt template so the base matches our steel exactly. Once the base is ready, the structure is lifted by crane, levelled, bolted down, wired to the controller and protected with bollards or a raised plinth.

  6. Commissioning and staff handover

Supply and controls are connected, prices programmed and the pylon checked by day and night from the road. We show station staff how to update prices before we leave.

Specification

Fuel retailers often supply their own pylon standard, which we build to exactly. For independent stations, this is the specification we start from.

Expert advice

Advice from our forecourt team

A price pylon is judged on the first of every month and on every afternoon in July. These are the decisions that make it pass both tests.

Size the digits for the approach, not the pumps

Digits that look big standing on the forecourt are often unreadable from the main road at speed. As a rough guide, a 300 mm digit reads from about 90 to 120 m, while 450 to 600 mm digits suit busy roads and higher speeds. Size them from the point where a driver decides whether to change lane, usually 150 to 250 m before the entrance, and keep every grade the same colour so prices compare at a glance.

Spend on the controller as well as the digits

The LEDs are rarely what fails. The weak point is a controller that loses its memory after a power surge, or a remote that loses its pairing, so the pylon shows blanks or old prices on the morning prices change. Ask for a controller that keeps the last prices through power loss, and test the update process with your own staff before handover.

Agree electrics with the safety plan

Forecourts have hazardous zones around dispensers, vents and tank fill points. A driver box or junction placed in the wrong spot can fail a safety inspection and has to be moved. We position all electrical equipment against the station's hazardous area drawing and agree it with the fuel retailer's safety team before any cable is laid.

Protect the base from day one

Pylons near entrances get clipped by tankers and trucks. Without bollards or a raised kerbed plinth, a minor collision bends cladding, damages cables or cracks the grout under the base plate. Bollards are a small line on the quote and the cheapest insurance a pylon can have.

Dim the digits for the neighbours

Daylight-readable digits are very bright, and on an urban site between villas or flats the same output at midnight floods bedroom windows with red or white light. Automatic dimming after dark, or a lower level after 11 pm, keeps prices readable and the neighbours calm, and it extends the life of the modules.

Pricing

Petrol station price sign cost: what affects it

We quote each pylon from its drawings and site plan, or from the retailer's standard. Send the site plan, fuel grades, digit size and any brand standard, and we usually send an itemised quote within 24 hours covering structure, panels, price system, installation and permits.

Pylon height and size

Taller and wider pylons need more steel, cladding, heavier anchor bolts and bigger lifting equipment, so height is usually the biggest single cost driver.

Number of fuel grades

Each grade needs its own price module, digits and label, so a pylon showing five grades costs more than one showing three.

Digit size and control

Larger digits and networked control cost more than smaller digits with a handheld remote, but improve visibility and reduce update effort.

Brand panel specification

Fuel retailers often specify materials, colours and lighting for the brand panel. Meeting these exactly can add cost but is usually required.

Site works and access

Anchor bolts, cable runs to the kiosk, crane access and working around a live forecourt add cost, especially on busy or tight sites.

Service panels

Convenience store, car wash and service panels add lightboxes and cladding, and can bring extra trade to the station.

Approvals

Petrol station price sign permits and safety rules

A new price pylon usually needs approval from the municipality for the site, such as Dubai Municipality, Sharjah Municipality or Ajman Municipality, and pylons near major roads may need RTA input on position, height and brightness. Branded stations also need the fuel retailer's design sign-off. Our draftsmen prepare the elevations and structural plans for each submission, and foundation requirements are confirmed with your project team or main contractor at the survey stage.

Forecourts carry fire safety requirements of their own. Electrical equipment has to be positioned and rated in line with Civil Defence and fuel retailer rules for hazardous areas, and some stations ask for method statements before any work on a live site. Requirements vary by emirate and operator, so we confirm them for your station before any steel is cut.

FAQ

Petrol Station Price Pylons questions we are asked most

How much does a petrol station price sign cost in the UAE?

The cost depends mainly on pylon height, the number of fuel grades, digit size, the control system, the brand panel specification and site access. A short totem with three grades and a handheld remote costs far less than a 10 m double-sided pylon with five grades and service panels. Send the site plan and requirements, and we will send an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

How are prices updated on an LED price pylon?

Most LED price pylons are updated with a handheld remote, a keypad inside the station or software connected over a mobile network. Staff enter the new prices and the digits change immediately. Networked systems let a fuel retailer update many stations at once, which reduces errors at the start of each month.

What size should petrol price digits be?

It depends on viewing distance and road speed. For most stations on city roads, 300 to 450 mm digits work well; stations on fast roads or set far back usually need 500 to 600 mm. The test is simple: a driver should read the price early enough to change lane and turn in safely.

Do petrol station pylons need a permit?

Usually yes. Pylons typically need municipality approval, those near major roads may need RTA input, and branded stations need the fuel retailer's sign-off. We prepare the drawings and structural plans and handle the submissions, and we confirm the current requirements for your site before fabrication.

Can manual price panels be upgraded to LED digits?

Often yes. If the structure and cladding are sound, manual panels can usually be replaced with LED digit modules of the same face size, plus a controller and power supply. We check the frame, cable routes and the retailer's current standard first, as some now specify particular digit colours or fonts.

What colour should LED price digits be?

Red, white, amber and green are all common, and branded stations follow the retailer's specification. What matters most is contrast, so digits sit on a matt black face, and every grade uses the same colour so prices compare at a glance. Red and amber hold up well in strong daylight; white looks clean at night.

How long does it take to build a price pylon?

It depends on the pylon size, the price system, approvals and when the site's foundation is ready, so we give you a realistic schedule with the quote rather than a generic figure. Brand approvals and permits are the usual source of delay, so we prepare them while the structure is being detailed, and the programme is confirmed once drawings are signed off.

How should a price pylon be maintained?

Look at it from the road regularly, because a dead middle segment turns an 8 into a 0 and a wrong price causes arguments at the pump. Clean the faces every few months, check the controller after power cuts, and have the bolts, cladding fixings and earthing inspected once a year. For pylons we built and installed, our sign maintenance contracts cover these visits.
