Illuminated Pylon Signs in the UAE

Illuminated pylon signs, engineered as well as lit

An illuminated pylon sign is a tall freestanding sign, usually 4 to 12 m high, with LEDs inside its cabinet so the brand glows at night, standing on a steel frame and concrete foundation near a road or site entrance and seen from both directions. Hotels, hospitals, dealerships, drive-through restaurants, company headquarters and gated communities use one when the building is set back, hidden by trees or walls, or the entrance is easy to miss.

An illuminated pylon is a building in miniature: steel, concrete, cladding and electrics, standing alone in the wind and the sun. The light is what people notice; the engineering is what keeps it upright and evenly lit. Warm air rises inside a tall cabinet, so the top runs hottest and dims first unless the cabinet is ventilated and the drivers sit low. The frame and base plate have to suit the shamal, and the foundation requirements are confirmed with your project team or main contractor at the survey stage. We weld, clad, wire and test every pylon in our own factory to drawings our draftsmen produce.

Bayan Signage is the production arm of Bayan Advertising, with 15 years in the UAE, and our factory at Alam Square, Industrial Area 2, Ajman has fabricated galvanised steel pylon and totem structures since 2016. Steel welding, powder coating, ACP cladding, LED assembly and illumination testing all happen under one roof, and our high-access installation crews erect what our fabricators built.

Our process

How we build illuminated pylon signs in our Ajman factory

  1. Sightline survey

We drive the approach routes, mark where a driver must first see the sign, usually 150 to 250 m before the entrance, and note what blocks the view. We also locate buried services and the power supply.

  2. Height, face and structure design

Designers set height and face size from those sightlines; draftsmen produce structural plans and authority drawings sized for height and wind area. Foundation requirements are confirmed with your project team or main contractor.

  3. Welding and cladding

Galvanised steel columns and cross members are welded in our steel shop, often in two or three sections for transport, then clad in ACP with removable service panels and a small top inspection panel.

  4. Lighting and burn-in

LED modules go on a central spine so both faces light evenly from one set. Drivers sit low behind a lockable door, and the cabinet runs at full brightness in our test area.

  5. Erection on site

Once the agreed foundation is ready, we check the anchor bolts against our steel template. A crane lifts the sections onto the bolts, which are levelled and tightened before cladding joints are closed.

  6. Commissioning at dusk

Faces are fitted, the supply connected through surge protection and earthing, and the pylon is commissioned at dusk, when brightness and evenness can be judged and the timer set.

Expert advice

Advice from our structures team

Most pylon problems are decided before anyone cuts steel: the wrong height, the wrong brightness or drivers in the wrong place. This is what we tell clients first.

Choose the height from sightlines, not ambition

Pylons are often taller or shorter than they need to be because nobody walked the approach. We stand where a driver needs to see the sign, typically 150 to 250 m before the entrance, and note trees, bridges, walls and other signs. Most single-brand pylons end up between 4 and 9 m. Face size then follows letter height: brand letters of 400 to 600 mm suit most roads, larger for fast highways.

Hold back on brightness

A pylon face at night needs only a few hundred candela per square metre to read clearly. More causes glare for drivers, washes out the colours and can bring complaints from neighbours. We fit dimmable drivers and often set a lower level after midnight. Push-through letters are kinder to night views than fully lit cabinets, because the dark face limits light spill.

Keep the drivers at the bottom

Drivers mounted at the top of a pylon sit in the hottest part of the cabinet and are hard to reach. Kept low behind a lockable access door, they run cooler and can be serviced from the ground. We also add a small inspection panel near the top, so a technician on a ladder can check the upper modules without removing a face, which eventually cracks with repeated handling.

Go double-sided if traffic comes both ways

A single face is invisible to half your visitors if the pylon stands beside a two-way road or at a junction. A double-sided cabinet shares one set of LEDs on a central spine, so the extra cost is mostly the second face and a little more depth, not a second sign.

Settle power and crane access at the survey

A pylon is only as quick to finish as its power supply and its crane position. We note where the cable will come from the distribution board, how far it has to run and whether paving, landscaping or buried services sit in the way. We also check where a crane can stand and swing on erection day. Settling these at the survey keeps surprises out of the quote and avoids a finished pylon standing dark while it waits for a connection.

Pricing

Illuminated pylon sign price in Dubai: what affects the cost

Every pylon is quoted from its drawings and site. Send a site plan, your logo and an idea of height and sides, and we usually send an itemised quote within 24 hours covering structure, faces, lighting, installation and permits.

Height and face area

Taller pylons and larger faces need more steel, cladding and LEDs. Height also raises crane costs and the scale of the structural design.

Lighting style

Fully lit cabinets are usually the most economical lit option. Push-through letters, illuminated 3D letters and halo details add fabrication and LEDs.

Structure and wind exposure

Steel sections grow with height and wind area, and exposed highway plots need more than sheltered gates. Foundation requirements are confirmed with your project team or main contractor at survey.

Cladding and finish

Standard ACP colours are economical. Curved shapes, stone-effect panels or stainless steel cladding increase material and labour.

Site conditions

Long cable runs from the distribution board, restricted crane access and working around finished paving or buried services add scope compared with an open plot.

Permits and approvals

Pylons need permit drawings with structural details, and signs near major roads may need further approvals, adding design and submission time.

Approvals

Illuminated pylon sign permits in Dubai and the UAE

Illuminated pylons usually need approval from Dubai Municipality, Sharjah Municipality, Ajman Municipality or the relevant free-zone authority, and those near major roads may need RTA input on position, height and brightness. Submissions normally include the elevation, site plan and structural plans, which our technical draftsmen prepare and follow through, with foundation details coordinated with your project team or main contractor.

Master communities, hospitals and hotel developments often add their own design guidelines on height, colour and lighting hours, and some authorities restrict moving images or high brightness if an LED screen is built in. Requirements vary by location and change over time, so we confirm the current rules for your exact site before fabrication.

FAQ

Illuminated Pylon Signs questions we are asked most

How much does an illuminated pylon sign cost in Dubai?

The cost depends mainly on height, face area, lighting style, the structure and foundation, cladding and site works. A 4 m single-sided cabinet pylon on an open plot costs far less than a 9 m double-sided pylon with push-through letters on a finished site. Send a site plan and your logo, and we will send an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

How tall should an illuminated pylon sign be?

Most single-brand pylons are between 4 and 9 m, with taller pylons kept for highways or sites hidden behind trees, walls or bridges. The right height comes from sightlines, not from the neighbour's pylon. We drive the approach roads, mark where a driver first needs to see the sign and set the height so the face clears every obstacle.

What foundation does a pylon sign need?

Every pylon stands on a concrete foundation with anchor bolts suited to its height, weight and wind area, and soil conditions can change its size considerably. We confirm the foundation requirements with your project team or main contractor at the survey stage, and our drawings show the base plate and bolt layout so the steel lands exactly where it should on erection day.

Should my pylon be single or double-sided?

If traffic passes in both directions, or the pylon stands at a junction, double-sided is almost always worth it, because a single face is invisible to half your visitors. A double-sided cabinet shares one set of LEDs on a central spine, so the extra cost is mostly the second face and some extra depth.

Why do some pylons go dimmer at the top?

Usually heat. Warm air rises inside a tall cabinet, so LEDs near the top run hotter, age faster and dim first, especially cheaper modules, and dust settling on the upper modules adds to it. On the pylons we build, ventilated cabinets, IP65 Samsung or Epistar modules and low-mounted drivers keep the face even, and the top inspection panel lets a technician check the upper modules easily.

Can an LED screen be built into a pylon?

Yes. Many pylons combine a lit brand cabinet with an outdoor LED screen for offers or messages. The screens are manufacturer products that we supply, integrate and install; they need more power, cooling and a content system, and authorities often restrict moving images or brightness near roads, so we check what is permitted first.

Can you update a pylon you built for us after a rebrand?

Yes. On pylons Bayan Signage made and installed, we can replace the faces with new artwork, swap tired cladding panels for new brand colours and upgrade drivers or controls, usually without touching the steel. Because we hold the original drawings, new faces are cut to fit first time. We inspect the base plate, bolts and frame on the same visit.

How long does an illuminated pylon sign project take?

The programme is confirmed with your quote, because it depends mostly on approvals and on when the foundation is ready on site. The steel is usually fabricated while the permit is processed, so the crane day can follow soon after both are ready. We give you a realistic schedule with the quote and keep you updated as approvals move.
