Wooden Signs and Signboards in Dubai, Sharjah & Ajman

Bayan Signage makes wooden signs for cafes, restaurants, hotels, villas and offices across the UAE. We choose the timber for the room it will hang in, laser-cut or laser-engrave the letters and logos in our Ajman factory, seal every face against dry air-conditioning, and install it ourselves, so the warmth you approve on the sample is still there years later.

Wooden Signs in the UAE

Wooden signs with the warmth of real timber

Wooden signs are signboards, plaques and logo panels made from solid hardwood, birch plywood or real-wood veneer, with letters laser-cut and raised on stand-offs, laser-cut and fixed flat, cut out of the plaque itself, laser engraved into the face, or printed and painted on the board. They suit brands that want warmth rather than shine: specialty coffee shops, bakeries, family restaurants, wellness studios, boutique hotels, executive offices and villa entrances. A wooden signboard reads as crafted and personal in a way that stainless steel or acrylic rarely does.

Wood is also the material most likely to fail if it is chosen badly. Unsealed backs cup, wide solid boards split in dry air-conditioned rooms, and softwood left in UAE sun greys and cracks within a season. The difference between a sign that lasts and one that does not is mostly decided before the laser runs: the species, the board type, whether every face and every cut edge is sealed, and whether the fixings let the timber move.

Bayan Signage has been producing signs in Ajman since 2016 as the production arm of Bayan Advertising, which has operated in the UAE for 15 years. Our lasers cut and engrave timber letters, logos and plaques in-house, our printers produce lettering and wood-effect graphics, and the same team adds acrylic or stainless steel details when a design mixes materials. Every wooden sign is checked against the approved artwork before it leaves the factory.

Our process

How we make wooden signs in our Ajman factory

  1. Brief, site photo and timber sample

We look at where the wooden sign will hang, how much sun or air-conditioning it gets and what the surrounding joinery looks like, then show real timber and finish samples.

  2. Artwork set for the material

Our designers adjust stroke widths, counters and spacing so every letter survives laser cutting and handling, and set Arabic and English as one layout rather than a translation squeezed underneath.

  3. Board preparation and sealing

Solid boards are acclimatised and sanded, wide panels are made from veneered board, and the face is sealed before printing or fixing so the finish stays even and the grain does not lift.

  4. Laser cutting, engraving and printing

Letters and cut-out plaques are laser-cut, fine text is laser engraved into the face, cut edges are sanded by hand, printed lettering runs on our UV printers, and acrylic or metal details are cut in-house so everything fits.

  5. Finishing and quality check

Letters are painted or oiled, every surface including the back and cut edges gets the final finish, and letters are positioned with a drilling template. We check the sign against the approved artwork.

  6. Installation and handover

Our crew fixes the sign on concealed cleats or slotted stand-offs that let the timber move, touches up any handling marks and explains how to care for the finish.

Specification

Wooden sign specification: how we build a Bayan signboard

This is our starting specification for an interior wooden sign. We change it for sun, humidity, size and budget, and list every change on the quote.

ComponentOur standardUpgrade optionsWhy it matters
Board18 mm oak or walnut veneered board, lipped edgesSolid oak, walnut, teak or iroko 20 to 40 mmVeneered board barely moves; solid timber gives real wood on every edge of a plaque.
LetteringLaser-cut letters, 6 to 10 mm thick, raised on pinsLaser-engraved text, flush letters, cut-out plaque, printed textRaised letters cast a shadow and read well; printed text suits small sizes and long wording.
Letter colourNatural timber edge, oiledPainted, brass-tone or gold-effect paint, acrylic overlayPainting letters before fixing keeps colour off the board and gives clean edges.
FinishHardwax oil, mattLacquer, UV-inhibiting varnish, stain matched to joineryOil is easy to refresh on site; varnish protects more but must be sanded before recoating.
SealingAll faces, edges and fixing holesExtra coats for semi-outdoor useAn unsealed back gains and loses moisture faster than the front, which is what makes boards cup.
FixingsConcealed French cleat or keyhole slotsStainless stand-offs with slotted holes, postsRigid screws at every corner stop wide boards moving and split them along the grain.

Expert advice

Advice from our estimating team

Most problems with wooden signs in the UAE come from the climate, not the design. These are the points we raise before anything is cut.

Use veneered board above about 400 mm wide

Solid timber moves across its grain as humidity changes, roughly 1 to 3 percent of its width depending on species. A 600 mm solid board can shift several millimetres between a humid evening and an air-conditioned office, and if it is screwed tight it splits. For anything wider than around 400 mm we recommend real-wood veneer on a stable core, keeping solid timber for small plaques, edges and villa boards.

Seal the back, not only the front

The most common failure we see on wooden signs is a board that cupped because only the visible face was finished. The back then absorbs and loses moisture at a different rate, and the board bows like a shallow dish. We seal every face, every edge and every fixing hole with the same finish. It takes an extra hour and prevents the most expensive problem wood can have.

Match fixings to the timber

Oak contains tannins that react with plain steel and leave black stains around screws, especially where cleaning water reaches them. We use stainless fixings with oak and any timber near moisture. For wide boards, holes are slotted across the grain so the wood can move without pulling against the screws.

Be honest about sun

In full UAE sun, even teak greys within months and needs re-oiling at least once a year, often twice. Pine and plywood crack and delaminate. If a sign faces the street in direct sun and nobody will maintain it, we will usually suggest an aluminium or ACP sign with a printed wood-effect finish instead, which looks similar from a distance and needs no care.

Size letters for timber, not for the screen

Fine strokes that look sharp on a screen can snap off as laser-cut wooden letters, and small counters in letters like e and a can burn or break away. As a rule we keep strokes at least 3 mm for laser-cut letters in 6 mm board, more in thicker board, and text height around 25 mm for every 3 m of reading distance. Where wording is long or tiny, we laser engrave or print it instead and adjust thin logo details on the first proof.

Pricing

Wooden signboard price in Dubai: what affects the cost

We price every wooden sign from its drawing. Send your logo, the size, a photo of the wall and whether it sees sun, and you will usually receive an itemised quote within 24 hours.

Timber species

Veneered board and ash are economical; solid oak sits in the middle; walnut, teak and iroko cost significantly more per board and have more waste.

Size and thickness

Thick, wide solid boards often have to be glued up from several staves, which adds material, workshop time and drying time compared with veneered panels.

Lettering method

Printed, vinyl or laser-engraved lettering is quickest. Raised laser-cut letters on stand-offs, cut-out plaques with a backing layer and detailed logos take more machine time and hand finishing.

Finish and colour

A single oil finish is simplest. Multiple lacquer coats, colour-matched stains, painted or gold-effect letters and acrylic overlays add labour.

Mixed materials

Adding acrylic logos or stainless steel letters to a timber panel adds material and fitting time but often gives the best result.

Fixings and installation

Keyhole fixings are cheap. Stand-offs, posts, high walls or work outside business hours add hardware and crew time.

Approvals

Wooden signs: landlord criteria and fire performance

Interior wooden signs usually need landlord or building approval rather than a municipality permit. Malls and managed towers often ask to see the size, the fixing method and the materials before installation. For larger timber wall areas, such as slatted reception walls, many fit-out reviews ask about fire performance, and we can specify fire-retardant treated or rated boards where the landlord or your consultant requires them.

A wooden sign on a shopfront, a villa gate or a community wall is treated as an outdoor sign and may need approval from the municipality, the free zone or the master developer. We prepare the drawings and specification for the submission. Rules differ between buildings and emirates, so we confirm the current requirement for your exact site before production.

Why Bayan Signage

Why businesses choose Bayan Signage for wooden signs

Timber chosen for the room

We specify the species, board type and finish for the actual conditions, from a dry office to a shaded terrace, and tell you when wood is the wrong choice.

Laser cutting and printing in-house

Laser cutting, laser engraving, printing and finishing happen in our Ajman factory, and you are welcome to visit while your wooden letters and plaques are being made.

Wood with metal or acrylic

Because we also cut acrylic and metal, combination signs are made under one roof and fit together exactly.

Bilingual layouts done properly

Arabic is designed as its own composition and checked against your trade licence, with stroke widths adjusted so it survives laser cutting and handling.

Itemised, honest quotes

Timber, laser cutting, printing, finishing, fixings and installation are listed separately, so you can see the effect of each choice on the price.

FAQ

Wooden Signs questions we are asked most

How much does a wooden signboard cost in Dubai?

It depends on the timber, the size and thickness, the lettering method, the finish and how it is fixed. A small oak plaque with printed text costs far less than a 1.5 m walnut board with raised laser-cut letters on stand-offs. Send us the logo, the size and a photo of the wall, and we will usually reply with an itemised quote within 24 hours.

Can wooden signs be used outdoors in the UAE?

Yes, with the right timber and regular care. Dense, oily hardwoods such as teak or iroko cope best, every face must be sealed, and the sign should sit off the wall in shade if possible. Expect to re-oil it at least once a year. If nobody will maintain it, a wood-effect metal or ACP sign is the more practical choice.

Raised, flat, engraved or cut-out wooden letters: what is the difference?

Raised letters are laser-cut from 6 to 10 mm board and fixed on pins or stand-offs so they cast a shadow, which reads best from across a room. Flat-mounted letters sit tight to the face for a slimmer, quieter look. A cut-out plaque has the letters cut through the plaque and backed with a contrasting layer. Laser engraving marks text into the face itself, darker than the timber, which suits small wording and dedications.

Solid wood or veneered board: which is better?

For small plaques and villa name boards, solid wood is better because every edge shows real timber. For panels wider than about 400 mm and for reception walls, veneered board is more stable, lighter and cheaper, and still looks like real wood. Many of our wooden signs combine a veneered panel with solid timber edges and laser-cut letters.

Will a wooden sign crack in an air-conditioned office?

Not if it is made correctly. Timber dried to a suitable moisture content, sealed on every face and fixed so it can move is stable even in very dry air. Cracks usually come from unsealed backs or wide solid boards screwed tight at the corners. On wooden signs we made, small splits can often be filled and refinished.

Can you make Arabic calligraphy in wood?

Yes. Arabic works beautifully in timber, but very fine strokes and small dots need care. We keep strokes wide enough to survive laser cutting, sometimes using a slightly bolder weight of the same typeface or printing the smallest text, and we check the wording against your trade licence or approved calligraphy before cutting. You approve a full-size proof first.

How long does it take to make a wooden sign?

It depends on the timber, the size, the number of finish coats and whether metal or acrylic details are involved, so we give you a realistic programme with the quote rather than a generic figure. Large solid boards and special species need time to acclimatise before machining. Installation is usually quick, often an hour or two on site.

How do I look after a wooden sign, and do you install outside Dubai?

Indoors, dust with a soft dry cloth, avoid silicone sprays and re-oil every one to two years if the finish dulls. We install across all seven emirates from our Ajman factory, and the site survey is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman. We can also refinish wooden signs we made.
