Valve Identification Tags in the UAE

Valve tags made from one master schedule

Valve tags are durable identification discs or plates fixed to each valve, carrying a unique valve number and usually the service, such as chilled water supply or domestic cold water, sometimes with the size or normal position. Each number matches the valve chart on the plant room wall and the as-built drawings. We make them for MEP contractors closing out commercial towers, hospitals, hotels, data centres, district cooling plants, residential risers and industrial facilities.

A neat tag set that disagrees with the valve chart is worse than no tags at all, because it sends a technician to the wrong isolation valve during a leak. The real work is in the data, the material and the fixing: one master schedule for tags and chart, a tag body that survives the heat or condensation at its location, and a metal chain or tie that does not go brittle. Our draftsmen generate tags and chart from the same file, and we check the first tag against the schedule before running the set.

Bayan Signage is the production arm of Bayan Advertising, which has 15 years in the UAE, and has operated its own sign factory in Ajman since 2016. Engraving, laser cutting, CNC routing, UV printing and laminating all happen in-house, which lets us turn a late schedule revision from the consultant into corrected tags quickly rather than reordering from an outside supplier.

Our process

How we make valve tags in our Ajman factory

  1. Schedule and specification review

We read the consultant's valve schedule and the MEP specification for material, size, colours and fixing, and flag missing numbers or unclear services before anything goes into production.

  2. Master file and sample

Our draftsmen set the longest entry first to fix the tag size, build one master file for tags and valve chart, and produce a sample tag for the consultant's approval.

  3. Cutting and printing

Laminate, stainless and brass tags are laser or rotary engraved; aluminium and acrylic tags are CNC-routed, UV-printed and laminated. Engraved numbers sit in the material, so they cannot fade. Fixing holes are placed so each tag hangs upright.

  4. Check against the schedule

Every batch is proofread line by line against the approved schedule, and the valve chart is printed from the same master so the two cannot disagree.

  5. Packing by location

Tags are packed in schedule order by plant room, floor or system, in labelled bags with matching chains or ties, so a missing tag is obvious at a glance.

  6. Installation and marked-up schedule

Our team can fix each tag clear of insulation, check it against the chart, and return a marked-up schedule noting any valve missing or mislabelled on site.

Specification

Valve tag specification

Material and fixing should follow the valve's location rather than one choice for the whole building. This is how we specify when the consultant leaves it open.

Expert advice

Advice from our MEP identification team

Valve tags are a common handover snag. These are the points that keep them off the snag list.

Wait for the approved schedule

If valve numbers change after tags are made, the whole set may need redoing. Produce permanent tags only from the approved schedule, and use temporary printed tags during testing and commissioning while the numbering is still moving. We hold your master file, so a late revision means remaking only the affected tags rather than starting again.

Size the tag for the longest entry

A number like CHW-B2-014 needs a wider tag than a simple 14, and squeezing the long entries into a smaller font halfway through a set looks careless. We find the longest entry in the schedule before choosing the size, use a rectangle rather than a disc where formats are long, and keep one size and shape per building.

Metal fixings anywhere warm or wet

Standard nylon ties go brittle in heat and snap, and the tag drops off; adhesive tags slide off sweating chilled water pipes. Use stainless bead chain, S-hooks, wire or stainless ties on hot, cold and outdoor valves. Plastic ties are acceptable only on cool, dry indoor valves where nothing will age them.

Hang it where it can be read

A tag wrapped under lagging or tucked behind a valve jacket is invisible when someone needs it. Fix it to the handle, stem or a point on the body where it hangs clear of insulation and moving parts and faces the access route. In risers, the tag should be readable with the cupboard door open, not after removing a panel.

One file for tags, chart and drawings

The mismatch consultants find at handover is almost always a tag reading one number and the chart on the wall reading another. We produce the tags and print the valve chart from one master spreadsheet, and we send the final file to your MEP team so the as-built drawings can be checked against it.

Pricing

Valve tag price in the UAE: what affects the cost

Valve tags are priced from the schedule. Send us the approved valve schedule as a spreadsheet, with the specification for material, size and colours and whether you need installation, and we will return an itemised quotation, usually within 24 hours.

Quantity

Tags are produced in batches from the schedule, and larger quantities cost less per tag because setup and checking are spread across the set.

Material

UV-printed aluminium and engraved laminate are the most economical; engraved or laser-cut 316 stainless and brass cost more but lasts longest in heat, salt air or outdoors.

Text and colour complexity

Short numbers are quick to cut and print. Long service descriptions, several colours and logos add machine time and proofreading.

Schedule preparation

A clean spreadsheet keeps production fast. Compiling the list from drawings or a site survey adds time to the job.

Fixing method

Stainless chains and S-hooks cost more than plastic ties, but they are usually specified for plant rooms and for hot or outdoor valves.

Installation and valve chart

Supply in labelled bags is cheapest. Installing across many floors and ceiling voids, and framing the valve chart, add labour and access.

Approvals

Valve tags and the standards that set them

Valve tags are identification labels rather than safety signs, so their format usually comes from the consultant's label schedule and the MEP specification rather than an authority permit. Colour coding often follows the project's pipe identification standard, which on many UAE projects references BS 1710 or a similar scheme. Consultants commonly check tags during testing and commissioning, and missing or mismatched tags can hold up handover.

Fire protection valves may carry specific identification requirements from Dubai Civil Defence or the civil defence authority in other emirates, applied through the fire consultant's specification. Where a tag carries a safety message, ISO 7010 symbols may be specified. We follow your documents and confirm the current requirement for fire and life safety valves before producing them.

Why Bayan Signage

Why MEP contractors choose Bayan Signage for valve tags

One master file

Tags and the valve chart come from the same spreadsheet, so the numbers on the valves and on the plant room wall cannot disagree.

FAQ

Valve Identification Tags questions we are asked most

How much do valve tags cost in the UAE?

The cost depends on the quantity, the material, the amount of text and colour, the fixing method and whether you need installation and a valve chart. Printed aluminium tags supplied in bags cost far less per piece than stainless tags installed across a tower. Send us the schedule and specification, and we will send an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

What material is best for valve tags?

It depends on where the valve is. UV-printed aluminium suits indoor, room-temperature valves and allows easy colour coding, and engraved traffolyte laminate is the classic choice for dry plant rooms because the number is cut in, not printed on. 316 stainless steel with an engraved or laser-cut number is best for rooftops, coastal locations and hot pipework, because it resists heat, UV and corrosion.

Can you make valve tags from our consultant's schedule?

Yes, that is how we usually work. Send the approved schedule as a spreadsheet with the specification for material, size and colours. We prepare a sample for approval, then produce the full set in schedule order, packed by location so installation is straightforward.

How are valve tags attached?

Most hang from stainless bead chain, S-hooks or wire around the handle, stem or valve body, and stainless cable ties are also used. Plastic ties are fine for cool indoor valves but go brittle near heat, so we avoid them on hot, outdoor and chilled lines.

What is the difference between valve tags and pipe markers?

A valve tag identifies one specific valve with a unique number that matches the valve chart. A pipe marker identifies the contents of a pipe and its flow direction along its length. Most MEP specifications need both, and we produce them together so services and colours agree.

Do you make the valve chart for the plant room?

Yes. We print and laminate the valve chart and frame it for the plant room wall, using the same master file as the tags. That keeps tags, chart and drawings consistent, and because charts are often required at handover, it makes sense to order them together.

Can valve tags include QR codes?

They can, though small tags have limited space. Many facility teams prefer a printed or laser-cut tag for the valve number plus a separate QR asset label on the valve body or nearby. That way the essential number stays readable even if the code is damaged or the maintenance system changes.

Can you install valve tags on site across the UAE?

Yes. Our team installs tags across plant rooms, risers and rooftops in all seven emirates, checking each against the schedule. Access to ceiling voids and high-level valves is planned with the MEP contractor, and we return a marked-up schedule of anything missing or mislabelled.
