Occupied Vacant Signs and In-Use Lights in Dubai & Sharjah

Bayan Signage makes occupied vacant signs for clinics, offices, washrooms, prayer rooms and studios across the UAE: bilingual sliders and dials built in our Ajman factory, and LED in-use lights wired by our own electricians. Every slider design is tested on a real door before the full set is made, so it shows the right status after the thousandth slam.

Occupied / Vacant Indicators in the UAE

Occupied vacant signs that people actually trust

An occupied vacant sign tells people whether a room is in use before their hand reaches the door. It can be a manual slider or rotating dial, an indicator that follows the door lock, or an LED light wired to a switch or booking system. We make them for consultation rooms, HR and interview rooms, single-occupancy washrooms, nursing rooms, prayer rooms and recording studios, usually in Arabic and English.

The real question is who has to remember to change the sign. A slider left on Occupied all afternoon soon teaches everyone to ignore it, and one that drifts to Vacant when the door shuts is worse than no sign. So we match the type to the room: automatic indicators where people forget, manual sliders where staff have a routine, and a track with enough friction that the status stays put. Every slider design is tested on a real door first.

Bayan Signage is the production arm of Bayan Advertising, which has worked in the UAE for 15 years, and we have made signs in our own Ajman factory since 2016. Face plates and slider tracks are CNC-routed to ±0.1 mm, status strips are printed in-house, and in-use lights are assembled, wired and tested by our electricians. Each occupied vacant sign is checked in both positions before it leaves the factory.

Our process

How we make occupied vacant signs in our Ajman factory

  1. Room-by-room review

We list every room that needs a status sign, how it is used and who is inside, and check door types and fire ratings. The survey is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.

  2. Status wording and layout

We agree the status text in Arabic and English, such as In Consultation or Prayer in Progress, add symbols so colour is never the only cue, and set one layout for every room type.

  3. CNC-cut plates and tracks

Face plates, windows and slider tracks are CNC-routed to ±0.1 mm, so the slider runs smoothly with just enough friction, and edges are radiused for wipe-down cleaning.

  4. Door test of the slider

A sample is fixed to a real door and the door is slammed repeatedly. If the slider shifts, we adjust the track friction before the full set is produced.

  5. LED assembly and wiring

In-use lights are assembled with LED modules and tested at full brightness in our workshop. On site, our electricians wire them to the switch, lock contact or system specified.

  6. Installation and two-state check

Signs go up at a consistent height, bonded on fire-rated doors. Every sign is checked in both positions, and every light is tested on and off, before handover.

Expert advice

Advice from our design team

Status signs are small, and the ones that fail usually fail for the same few reasons. These are the decisions that keep a sign trusted.

Choose automatic where people forget

In busy consultation rooms and shared washrooms, manual sliders end up stuck on one status all day. If the status really matters, use an indicator that changes with the lock, or an LED light the doctor switches on as part of starting a consultation. Keep manual sliders for rooms with a clear routine, such as interview rooms or quiet rooms used by a small team.

Never rely on colour alone

Red and green are traditional, but a significant share of people, mostly men, have some red-green colour vision deficiency, and bright sun from a corridor window washes out colour for everyone. Put words in both languages in the status window, and add a symbol: a person icon for occupied and an open-door or tick icon for vacant.

Pick words that suit the room

Occupied and Vacant suit washrooms. A clinic reads better with In Consultation and Available, a studio with Recording, and a prayer or quiet room with In Use, which is more respectful than Occupied. Arabic wording needs the same care: a direct translation of Occupied often reads awkwardly, so we choose natural Arabic terms.

Do not confuse a status sign with a warning light

X-ray suites, some laboratories and certain plant rooms need specific warning lights as part of their safety design, specified by the relevant consultant and linked to the equipment. An in-use sign is a courtesy, not a safety device. We make status signs and lights, and leave regulated warning systems to the consultant's specification.

Pricing

Occupied vacant sign price in Dubai: what affects the cost

We quote from your room list. Tell us how many rooms, how each is used and whether you want manual or lit indicators, and we usually return an itemised quote within 24 hours, with signs, lights and electrical work shown separately.

Indicator type

Manual sliders and dials are the most economical. LED in-use lights add modules, drivers and wiring, and linked systems add coordination time.

Materials and finish

Acrylic is the simplest. Brushed aluminium, stainless and colours matched to door hardware cost more but wear better in high-use rooms.

Custom wording

Standard Occupied and Vacant text is simplest. Custom phrases per room type and bilingual layouts add artwork, though only once per type.

Integration

Linking lights to locks, switches or booking systems needs coordination with the door hardware supplier, electricians or IT team, ideally during the fit-out.

Quantity and variety

A clinic with twenty identical consultation rooms is efficient to produce. Mixed sizes and types across a building add design and set-up time.

Approvals

Occupied vacant signs in clinics and fire-rated buildings

Indoor occupied vacant signs do not need a municipality permit, but other rules usually apply. Many corridor doors are fire-rated, so we bond signs rather than drilling the door leaf, and mount in-use lights on the wall or frame. Electrical connections are made by our electricians to the building's requirements, and we confirm fixing methods with the fit-out contractor or facility manager.

In clinics and hospitals, signs should be smooth, sealed and easy to clean in line with infection control practice, and healthcare operators and regulators may set their own requirements. Buildings designed to the Dubai Universal Design Code also expect status information that does not rely on colour alone. We confirm the current requirements for your facility before production.

Why Bayan Signage

Why clinics and offices choose Bayan Signage for occupied vacant signs

Tested on a real door

Every slider design is slammed on a real door before production, so the status stays where the user leaves it.

Made in our own factory

Plates, tracks and status strips are cut and printed in Ajman, with no outsourcing, so every room in the building matches.

Electricians on our team

In-use lights are assembled, wired and tested by our own electricians, coordinated with your fit-out contractor.

Wording that fits

Status text is chosen for each room type in natural Arabic and English, with symbols so colour is never the only cue.

Matches your door signs

Status signs are designed in the same family as your office, room number and meeting room signs, so the corridor reads as one system.

FAQ

Occupied / Vacant Indicators questions we are asked most

How much does an occupied vacant sign cost in Dubai?

It depends on the type, the material, custom wording and whether the indicator is lit or linked to a lock or system. A set of acrylic sliders for an office floor costs far less than LED in-use lights wired into twenty clinic rooms. Send us the room list and we will send an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

What is the best type of occupied vacant sign?

The most reliable type changes automatically, such as a lock-linked indicator or an LED light wired to a switch, because it does not depend on memory. Manual sliders are simple and economical, and work well where people have a routine, such as interview rooms or small clinics.

Can occupied signs be in Arabic and English?

Yes, and in the UAE they usually are. The status window shows both languages, often with a symbol. We choose Arabic terms that read naturally rather than translating word for word, and custom phrases such as In Consultation can be used on every room of the same type.

Can an in-use light be linked to the door lock?

Yes, if the lock has indicator contacts that can switch a low-voltage light, or with a separate switch inside the room. It needs coordination with the door hardware supplier and an electrician, so it is best planned during the fit-out. Retrofitting usually means opening walls for cable.

Are occupied vacant signs suitable for clinics?

Yes, they are widely used on consultation and examination rooms. Clinic signs should be smooth and sealed for cleaning, and LED lights are often preferred because staff see them from the nurse station. Healthcare operators may have their own requirements, which we confirm with the facility team.

Do meeting rooms need occupied signs?

Small meeting rooms used informally can use a simple slider. Rooms booked through a calendar are better served by digital booking panels showing the current and next booking. We design sliders in the same family as your meeting room name signs.

Can occupied signs be fixed to glass doors?

Yes. On glass doors we bond the sign with clear adhesive and add a matching patch on the inside to hide the fixing. The status window should sit on a frosted band or opaque backing so it reads clearly. We do not drill glass doors on site, so bonding is the standard fixing.

Why does a sliding occupied sign move on its own?

Usually because the track has too little friction, so the slider shifts when the door closes. We set the friction in the CNC-routed track and test each design by slamming a real door. If one of our signs starts to drift after years of use, the track can often be adjusted or the slider replaced.
