Room Number Signs in the UAE

Room number signs are the address system of a building

Room number signs confirm that a visitor has arrived. Directional signs bring people to the right corridor; the number on the wall beside the door tells them which room is which. When numbers follow a clear logic, such as 2.14 for second floor, room 14, or B105 for Block B, first floor, room 5, people find a room they have never seen. We make them for schools, clinics, universities, offices and plant rooms.

Making one sign is easy. Getting two hundred right, in a sequence people can predict, is the real job. The architect's drawing codes are rarely the right public numbers, because they skip rooms, number cupboards and use references nobody outside the design team understands. Before we cut anything, we build a numbering schedule from your plans, have it checked by someone who uses the building, and only then produce each sign against that schedule.

Bayan Signage is the production arm of Bayan Advertising, which has worked in the UAE for 15 years, and our Ajman factory has been producing signs since 2016. Our draftsmen prepare the schedules, our CNC routers and laser cutters cut acrylic and aluminium to ±0.1 mm, and our installers fix and check every room number sign in place. Facilities teams rely on those numbers as much as visitors, so we keep every schedule on file.

Our process

How we produce room number signs in our Ajman factory

  1. Floor plans and numbering logic

Our draftsmen take your plans and propose a public numbering logic: block, floor, room, with odd and even sides in long corridors and spare numbers left for future rooms.

  2. Sign schedule and user review

Every sign is listed with its number, name and position. A school administrator, ward manager or facilities supervisor reviews it, because users spot errors that drawings hide.

  3. Cutting and printing

Panels are CNC-routed or laser-cut to ±0.1 mm, numbers are UV-printed, engraved, cut in vinyl or cut as raised acrylic, and every sign carries its schedule reference on the back.

  4. Check and pack by corridor

Each sign is checked against the approved schedule for number, spelling and Arabic text, then packed by floor and corridor so installation follows the building, not the box.

  5. Installation at one height

Our crew fixes each sign on the latch-side wall with a positioning template, cleans surfaces before bonding, and uses tamper-resistant fixings in schools and public areas.

  6. Walk-through and record

We walk every corridor and tick each sign off the schedule, then hand the final schedule to your facilities team as the record for replacements and renumbering.

Specification

This is our standard for a typical school, clinic or office building. The consultant's specification or the operator's manual takes priority where there is one.

Expert advice

Advice from our draftsmen

The mistakes we see on room numbering are almost never about the sign itself. They are about the numbers, and they are all avoidable on paper.

Do not publish the architect's codes

Drawing references such as L2-R045, or sequences that jump because cupboards and shafts were numbered, confuse every visitor. Create a public numbering logic first, even if the internal drawing codes stay different. Floor number then room number, running in sequence along each corridor, is the logic most people can predict without help.

Leave gaps for the room that gets split

Large rooms are often divided later, and a tight sequence has nowhere to go, so you end up with 214A and 214B. Leave a spare number or two in each run, especially in schools and clinics that grow. It costs nothing on the schedule and saves renumbering a whole corridor when the building changes.

Mount on the wall, not the door

A number on the door disappears when the door is open against the wall, and doors get replaced during refits. Put the sign on the wall beside the latch side at one agreed height. Where the latch side is blocked by a column or another door, use the nearest clear wall, and do the same everywhere in the building.

Contrast matters more than size

In a corridor read from 3 to 6 m, a 40 mm number in dark on light, or light on dark, beats a 60 mm number in grey on silver. For long hospital or school corridors, numbers up to 75 mm or a projecting flag sign help people scan from further away. We test a sample under the actual corridor lights before the full run.

Let a real user check the schedule

Architects and consultants know the drawings; users know the building. A school administrator will spot the store numbered as a classroom, and a ward manager will know the two rooms everyone already calls by other names. One review meeting before production saves dozens of remakes after installation.

Pricing

Room number signs price in Dubai: what affects the cost

We quote from your plans and sign schedule. Send floor plans or a room list, the material you have in mind and any consultant or operator standard, and we usually return an itemised quote within 24 hours, with the schedule work shown separately.

Number of rooms

Each sign is unique and checked against the schedule. Larger runs cost less per sign, though they need more production and checking time.

Raised numbers and layers

CNC-cut acrylic numbers bonded onto the panel cost more than printed signs, because of the extra cutting, bonding and alignment on every sign.

Material and shape

Printed acrylic and printed aluminium are economical. Brushed metal, custom shapes and integrated logos add cost, multiplied across every room.

Changeable name inserts

A window for changing room names adds a little per sign but saves a new sign whenever a room changes use.

Schedule preparation

Turning drawings into a clean numbering schedule takes draftsman time, especially in large or phased buildings with several renumberings.

Fixings and phasing

Tamper-resistant fixings and installation in occupied schools or hospitals, often out of hours, take longer than fitting an empty building.

Approvals

Room number signs: accessibility and operator standards

Indoor room number signs do not need a municipality permit, but several standards usually apply. Buildings designed to the Dubai Universal Design Code are expected to provide clear room identification, with high contrast, non-glare finishes, legible fonts and consistent mounting positions along accessible routes. Schools and healthcare facilities often follow their regulator's or operator's own manuals as well.

We work from your consultant's specification or operator standard where there is one, and from the Universal Design Code guidance where there is not. Requirements vary by building type and emirate, so we confirm what applies at the start and design every room number sign in the building as one family, so main corridors and back-of-house read as one system.

Why Bayan Signage

Why facilities teams choose Bayan Signage for room number signs

Schedules by our draftsmen

We prepare the numbering logic and the sign schedule ourselves, from your plans, and keep it on file as the record for future changes.

Made in our own factory

Cutting, printing, assembly and checking all happen in our Ajman factory, with no outsourcing, so a 300-room run comes out consistent.

Checked room by room

Every sign is checked against the schedule before packing, and again on the wall during our walk-through before handover.

One family of signs

Printed, raised-number and back-of-house signs are designed as one family, so plant rooms and main corridors look like the same building.

Work around live buildings

Our crews install in occupied schools and clinics floor by floor, out of hours where needed, across all seven emirates.

Trusted across the UAE

More than 500 clients across the UAE, including national retail groups and international brands, with most work from returning clients and referrals.

FAQ

Room Number Signs questions we are asked most

How much do room number signs cost in Dubai?

It depends on the number of rooms, the material, whether numbers are printed or raised and whether the signs carry changeable names. Printed acrylic signs for a 60-room school cost far less per sign than brushed metal signs with raised numbers for a hospital. Send us the plans or a room list and we will send an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

How should rooms be numbered in a building?

The most common logic is floor number followed by room number, for example 214 for floor 2, room 14, often with a block letter on multi-building sites. Numbers usually run in sequence along each corridor, odd on one side and even on the other in long corridors. The test is whether a visitor can predict where a room is.

Where should a room number sign be mounted?

On the wall beside the latch side of the door, at one consistent height, so it stays visible when the door is open. We usually set the centre of the sign about 1,200 to 1,500 mm above the floor, where it reads at eye level and stays within reach. On double doors, the sign normally goes on the right-hand wall.

Which material is best for room number signs?

For offices, schools and clinics we usually recommend 5 mm acrylic with the number printed on the back face, because cleaning never reaches the print. Plant rooms and stores get engraved laminate or printed aluminium, which take knocks better. Where a client wants more presence in main corridors, we add raised CNC-cut acrylic numbers in the same style.

What size should room numbers be?

Usually 25 to 50 mm high, which reads comfortably from a few metres along a corridor. Long corridors and buildings used by people with low vision benefit from numbers up to 75 mm. Contrast and a clear sans serif font matter as much as height.

Can room names change without replacing the sign?

Yes, if the sign includes an insert window. The room number stays permanent, while the name or function is printed on a strip that slides in. This suits schools, universities and hospitals where room uses change regularly, and we supply the template so your team can print new inserts.

Can you prepare the numbering schedule for us?

Yes. Our draftsmen create a numbering logic from your floor plans, prepare a schedule showing every room's number, name and sign position, and send it for approval. Where a system already exists, we extend it consistently to new floors or blocks.

Can you replace or add room number signs in an existing building?

Yes. We match the existing font, size and material from a sample or photographs, or propose a new standard if the old signs are too mixed to match. Installation in occupied buildings is planned floor by floor, and the site survey is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.
