Apartment Number Signs in the UAE

Apartment number signs: where the address meets the door

Apartment number signs are the numerals or plates on or beside each flat's front door. The same number appears on the title deed, the tenancy contract, the utility account, the access card and the delivery app, and the sign is where all of them meet the building. We make them for high-rise towers, low-rise walk-up blocks, staff accommodation and serviced residences, usually as part of a developer's handover package or an owners' association refresh.

The best apartment numbering is boring in a good way: the same plate in the same position on every door, numbers that match the lift lobby range signs, and a finish that still looks clean after five years of luggage and deliveries. What goes wrong is rarely the numeral. It is a number that does not match the deeds, an adhesive that slides off a sun-facing wall in August, or a floor where every owner has fitted their own design.

Bayan Signage is the production arm of Bayan Advertising, which has been in the UAE market for 15 years, and our factory at Alam Square, Industrial Area 2, Ajman has made signs since 2016. Stainless and mild steel numerals are laser-cut, acrylic and aluminium are CNC-routed to ±0.1 mm, and finishes are applied in-house. We keep the artwork for every building, so a missing apartment number can be replaced to match.

Our process

How we produce apartment number signs in our Ajman factory

  1. Official unit list check

We take the unit schedule from the developer or association and check it against the official unit numbers used on title deeds and utility accounts, flagging any mismatch with the drawings.

  2. Corridor survey

We survey a typical floor for door type, fire rating, wall finish and whether the corridor is air-conditioned or open-air. The visit is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.

  3. Sample on a real door

One full apartment number is made in the final finish and fixed on site, so you approve size, spacing and finish in the corridor's actual light.

  4. Cutting and finishing

Numerals are laser-cut or CNC-routed, edges deburred, then brushed, polished, PVD-finished or powder-coated. Each floor's set is checked against the unit list and packed with a fixing template.

  5. Floor-by-floor installation

Our crew fixes numbers at one height with the template, using high-temperature adhesive and mechanical fixings in open corridors, and checks each floor against the schedule before moving up.

  6. Handover record and spares

The association or facility manager receives the final schedule, the artwork reference and a small stock of spare numerals, so a missing number can be replaced without waiting for a new production run.

Expert advice

Advice from our residential projects team

Apartment numbers stay on the doors for the life of the building, and mistakes are awkward to fix once residents have moved in. These are the checks we insist on.

Check the deeds, not the drawings

Architects' drawings often carry draft unit numbers that changed during sales. If the door says 1204 but the title deed says 12-04 or 1204A, residents run into problems with utility connections, deliveries and authority records. We cross-check every apartment number against the official unit list before cutting a single numeral, and send the mismatches back to the developer in writing.

Brushed beats mirror in a busy corridor

Mirror-polished numerals look sharp at handover and show every fingerprint, scratch and water mark within months. Brushed stainless keeps its look far longer with only a wipe. If the design calls for a polished or gold finish, PVD over brushed stainless gives the colour with a more forgiving surface.

Open corridors need different fixings

Many low-rise buildings in Sharjah, Ajman and the Northern Emirates have open-air corridors that face the sun. Wall surfaces there get hot enough in summer to soften standard adhesives, and numbers slide or drop. We use high-temperature adhesive with a mechanical fixing, choose aluminium or stainless over acrylic, and size numerals up to about 100 mm for readability in glare.

Set one standard and keep it

Once owners start fitting their own numbers, a corridor turns into a patchwork that breaches most community rules and confuses visitors. Owners' associations should fix one standard, keep the artwork on file and hold a few spare numerals. Replacing one missing digit from stock is quicker than any dispute about what the original looked like.

Pricing

Apartment number signs price in Dubai: what affects the cost

We quote from the unit schedule and the chosen style. Send the number of units and floors, a photo of a typical door and the finish you have in mind, and we usually return an itemised quote within 24 hours, with numbers, lift lobby signs and installation priced separately.

Material and finish

Acrylic and aluminium are economical. Stainless costs more, and PVD colours or mirror polish add finishing cost across hundreds of doors.

Numerals or plates

Individual numerals take longer to install than a single plate, because each digit is positioned and spaced, multiplied across every door.

Number of units

Larger buildings benefit from volume, but each number is unique and checked against the schedule, which adds production and checking time.

Fixing method

VHB tape is the quickest. Locator pins and mechanical fixings take longer but look better and are much harder to remove.

Corridor type

Open-air corridors need heat-rated adhesives, mechanical fixings and UV-stable materials, which add a little per door.

Additional signs

Lift lobby range signs, meter rooms, mailroom and refuse room numbering widen the scope, but keep the building consistent.

Approvals

Apartment number signs: developer, association and emergency access

Indoor apartment number signs do not normally need a municipality permit, but they must match the official records. In Dubai, unit numbers on doors should agree with the numbers registered for the building, and developers usually check this during handover. In strata buildings, the owners' association or facility manager sets the door appearance rules that any replacement number must follow.

Civil Defence and ambulance crews rely on clear unit numbers and lift lobby range signs to reach the right flat quickly, so numbers should be legible, high-contrast and consistent with the floor plans. Buildings designed to the Dubai Universal Design Code may also set expectations for character height, contrast and mounting height at lift lobbies and corridors. We confirm what applies to your building before production.

FAQ

Apartment Number Signs questions we are asked most

How much do apartment number signs cost in Dubai?

It depends on the material, whether you choose individual numerals or plates, the number of units, the fixing method and whether lift lobby signs are included. Acrylic plates for a low-rise block cost far less per door than PVD stainless numerals on locators in a luxury tower. Send us the unit count and a door photo for an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

What size should apartment door numbers be?

Usually 50 to 75 mm high for indoor corridors, which reads from a few metres away. Long or dim corridors may need 100 mm, and open-air corridors benefit from larger, higher-contrast numbers because of glare. Every unit in the building should use the same size and style.

Should apartment numbers go on the door or the wall?

Both are common. On the door, numbers sit at eye level and are visible when the door is closed. On the wall beside the latch side, they stay visible when the door is open and avoid drilling a fire-rated door, which is why many towers choose the wall. The building standard should decide.

What material lasts best for apartment numbers?

Brushed stainless steel is the most durable and the easiest to keep clean, especially in busy corridors. Powder-coated aluminium is a good, lighter choice for open corridors. Acrylic is economical but can crack, fade or warp in direct sun, so we keep it to air-conditioned interiors.

Can you replace missing apartment numbers to match?

Usually, yes. We measure and photograph the existing numbers, match the font, size and finish, and produce replacements, from a single digit to a full floor. If we made the originals, we already hold the artwork. If the existing numbers are too mixed to match, we can propose a new building standard.

Do apartment numbers need to be in Arabic?

Apartment numbers in the UAE normally use Western numerals, which match title deeds, utility accounts and lift panels. Arabic is more commonly used on lift lobby signs, building names and service room signs. Eastern Arabic numerals can be used decoratively, but should be checked against the official records first.

How long does it take to make apartment number signs?

We give you a realistic schedule with the quote, once we know the number of units, the finish and the sample approval date. Installation depends on the number of floors and access, and is normally planned before handover. Checking the unit list against official records is the step that most often needs extra time.
