Edge-Lit Letters in the UAE

Edge-lit acrylic letters that glow from within

Edge-lit acrylic letters are cut from thick clear cast acrylic, usually 15 to 30 mm, with LED strip hidden against one edge so light travels inside the sheet and escapes through polished edges and CNC-routed detail lines. By day they look like clear glass; at night the outline draws itself in light, with no box, trim or visible source. Hotel lobbies, spa receptions, lounges, jewellery counters, boardroom glass and exhibition stands are where they belong.

They are a quiet product, and the skill is in the finishing. Acrylic carries light faithfully, including every flaw: a tool mark, a bubble, a fingerprint on a polished edge or stress lines in cheap extruded sheet all glow when lit. Light also weakens as it travels, so letter height and the number of lit edges have to be planned together. We cut, route, polish and fit LEDs at Alam Square, Industrial Area 2, Ajman, so each stage is checked lit before the next.

Bayan Signage is the production arm of Bayan Advertising, part of the UAE market for 15 years, and our Ajman factory has worked acrylic since 2016. Our electricians assemble and test the LED strip and drivers in-house, and our designers check calligraphy and fine logo lines at production size before any sheet goes on the router. One project manager coordinates with your fit-out contractor so cables are hidden before walls are finished.

Our process

How we make edge-lit acrylic letters in our Ajman factory

  1. Room and power survey

We note the ambient light level, where the letters will be seen from, the wall or counter build-up and where power can reach. The survey is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.

  2. Design and light planning

Designers set height, thickness and which edges carry LEDs, and check calligraphy and fine lines at full size. Routed detail lines are proofed on screen and lit on an offcut.

  3. CNC cutting and routing

Letters are cut from cast sheet to ±0.1 mm, and the LED groove is routed into the base or back. Detail lines and patterns are routed into the face on the same machine.

  4. Polishing and lit inspection

Edges are polished, then every letter is lit on the bench in a darkened corner. Any scratch, chip or bubble that glows is re-polished or the letter recut.

  5. LED fitting and testing

High-density strip is set into the groove, connected to its driver and run at full brightness to check evenness. Each letter is compared with the approved artwork.

  6. Installation

Standing letters arrive assembled on their base. Wall letters go up from a template over concealed cable holes, and we check the glow with room lights dimmed before handover.

Expert advice

Advice from our acrylic and LED team

Edge-lit letters are beautiful in the right room and invisible in the wrong one. These are the points we check before recommending them.

Match the product to the room light

Edge lighting glows rather than shines. In a hotel lobby with dimmed evening lights it looks superb; in a sunny shop window or a brightly lit mall concourse it almost disappears. If your space is lit like an office all day, we usually suggest painted acrylic or a halo-lit logo instead, and keep edge lighting for the evening areas where it can do its job.

Keep letters within reach of the light

Light fades as it travels through acrylic. Letters lit from the base look even up to about 300 to 400 mm tall; above that the tops look dim. For taller letters or large wall logos, we route LED channels on two edges or into the back, which adds cost but keeps the glow consistent from bottom to top.

Choose thickness by viewing distance

We use 15 mm sheet for counter signs read from 1 to 4 m, and 20 to 30 mm for lobby walls read from 5 to 10 m. Strokes should be at least 10 to 15 mm wide, because thin parts carry little light and snap during handling or cleaning. Fine calligraphy usually works better routed as detail lines into one thicker panel than cut out as fragile separate pieces.

Plan cables before the fit-out closes

Every wall-mounted edge-lit letter needs a concealed cable route. Drilling neat holes and pulling cable is quick before the wall is painted or clad, and slow and messy afterwards. We send your fit-out contractor a cable plan with hole positions as soon as the design is approved, and on glass partitions we route cables through the frame or a slim vertical channel.

Pick colour temperature for the brand

Warm white at around 3,000 K suits hospitality, spas and timber or stone interiors. Neutral or cool white looks cleaner for clinics, tech firms and white interiors. RGB is fun in bars and at events, but colours look washed out in bright rooms. We can light offcuts of your chosen sheet in each white so you see the difference before ordering.

Pricing

Edge-lit acrylic letter price in Dubai: what affects the cost

We price edge-lit letters from the drawing. Send your logo, the wall or counter size and a photo of the room, and we will return an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

Acrylic thickness

Thicker cast sheet carries more light and looks more substantial, but material and machining time rise with each step up in thickness.

Edge polishing

Polishing every glowing edge evenly is skilled, time-consuming work, and patchy polishing shows as patchy light.

Routed detail

Routed patterns, calligraphy and fine logo lines take extra router or laser time and careful finishing so light catches cleanly.

LED and channel system

High-density strip, aluminium channels, extra lit edges on tall letters, dimmers and RGB controllers each add components.

Mounting and cabling

Each wall letter needs a concealed cable route, which is quick before walls are finished and slower on painted walls or glass.

Installation timing

Work in occupied hotels or offices often has to happen at night or around guests, which affects the installation line.

Approvals

Approvals and fit-out criteria for edge-lit acrylic letters

Indoor edge-lit signs usually need only landlord, hotel operator or building management approval, and malls often ask for a drawing of anything visible from the concourse, including colour temperature and whether colour-changing effects are used. Our draftsmen prepare that drawing with sizes, materials and wiring details for the fit-out approval pack.

If letters sit behind a shopfront window or under a covered entrance where they are visible from outside, municipality, free-zone or community signage rules may also apply, in the same way as other signs. Electrical connections should follow the building's fit-out requirements. We confirm what applies to your exact site before fabrication.

Why Bayan Signage

Why businesses choose Bayan Signage for edge-lit acrylic letters

Cut and polished in-house

Our CNC routers and laser cutters work cast acrylic daily, and routing, polishing and LED fitting happen in the same Ajman factory.

Every letter inspected lit

We light letters before final polishing, so hidden flaws are fixed in the workshop instead of glowing in your lobby.

LED work by our electricians

Strip, drivers and dimmers are fitted and tested by our own team, with drivers placed where they stay cool and reachable.

Coordination with your fit-out

We send cable plans to your contractor early, so wiring is hidden before walls and partitions are finished.

FAQ

Edge-Lit Letters questions we are asked most

How much do edge-lit acrylic letters cost in Dubai?

Cost depends on sheet thickness, letter size, polishing and routed detail, the LED system and cabling. A small counter logo in 15 mm acrylic on a lit base is a modest job; a large lobby logo with routed detail, lit on two edges, costs considerably more. Send the logo, the size and a room photo for an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

Can edge-lit letters be used outdoors?

Only in shaded, sheltered positions such as under a deep canopy or in a covered entrance. In direct UAE sun the glow is barely visible, and heat and UV stress the acrylic over time. For exposed facades, front-lit or halo-lit letters are far more suitable, with an edge-lit sign used as a second, decorative piece inside.

How bright are edge-lit letters?

Softer than front-lit or halo-lit letters. They are designed to glow, so they look best in rooms with moderate or dimmed lighting. In bright spaces they still work as a decorative feature, but they should not be the main sign people need to read from far away.

What thickness of acrylic do you use?

Usually 15 to 30 mm clear cast acrylic. For counter signs, 15 to 20 mm is typical; for wall logos read from further away, 20 to 30 mm. Thinner sheet carries little light and looks weak. We can show you lit offcuts of each thickness in our workshop before you decide.

Can edge-lit letters change colour?

Yes. RGB LED strip can be fitted in the base or back channel with a controller to change colours or run effects. Coloured glows look best in dim spaces such as bars, lounges and events, and some malls and landlords restrict colour-changing effects. Fixed warm or cool white is usually the safer choice for receptions.

What is the difference between edge-lit letters and an edge-lit lightbox?

Edge-lit letters are individual pieces of clear acrylic that glow along their outlines. An edge-lit lightbox is a slim panel with a light guide sheet behind a printed graphic, giving an evenly lit image. Letters suit logos and feature walls; lightboxes suit menus, posters and promotions that change.

How are edge-lit letters powered?

Through low-voltage wiring, 12 or 24 V DC, to a driver connected to mains power. Standing letters can plug into a nearby socket; wall letters need a concealed cable route behind each letter. We plan cabling with your fit-out team so wires are hidden before walls are finished.

How do I clean edge-lit acrylic letters?

Dust with a soft microfibre cloth and wipe with water and a little mild soap. Never use glass cleaners, alcohol or solvents, which craze polished edges and leave fine cracks that glow when lit. Avoid touching polished edges, as fingerprints show clearly. If a letter goes dark, the LED strip in its base can be replaced without remaking the acrylic.
