Large building letters signage, engineered for height

Large building letters signage is the name you read on a tower crown from Sheikh Zayed Road, on a hotel parapet from the beach or on a warehouse gable from Emirates Road. Each letter is a built-up aluminium box, usually a metre or more tall, with its own internal frame, LED lighting and brackets back to the structure. We make them for building owners, developers, anchor tenants and facility managers who need a name read from hundreds of metres away, by day and after dark.

At this scale a letter is a small piece of facade engineering. Wind pressure at roof level is many times what a shopfront sees, afternoon sun on a west-facing crown punishes dark finishes, and every service visit needs a cradle, a rope team or a boom lift. The difference between a name that stays straight and evenly lit for a decade and one that sags or goes patchy lies in the internal frame, the bracket design, the drainage and where the drivers sit. We settle each of those in our factory, before anything is lifted.

Bayan Signage has run its factory at Alam Square, Industrial Area 2, Ajman since 2016 as the production arm of Bayan Advertising, which has worked in the UAE for 15 years. Our draftsmen produce the shop drawings and structural plans, our welders build the galvanised steel frames that many building names hang from, and our installation crews are trained for high-access work. One project manager follows the job from the first sightline check to the night-time handover.

Our process

How we build large building letters in our Ajman factory

  1. Sightline survey

We photograph the building from the roads, junctions and districts where the name has to read, inspect the parapet or crown construction and locate the power supply. The survey is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.

  2. Scale mock-up and structural drawing

Designers place the letters on a photo of the real building at true scale. Draftsmen then draw the brackets or steel frame, the fixings and the load path, used for fabrication and for the authority submission.

  3. CNC cutting and letter building

Faces and backs are CNC-routed to ±0.1 mm, returns are folded and joined around an internal aluminium frame, and steel brackets are laser-cut. The biggest letters are split at planned joints so they can be lifted.

  4. LED layout and full-brightness test

Modules are laid on a grid matched to the return depth and drivers are wired for remote mounting. Every letter runs at full brightness in our test area so dark patches are fixed before it is closed.

  5. Finishing and inspection

Returns are powder-coated, weep holes are drilled at the low points and service panels are fitted. Each letter is checked against the approved artwork for size, colour and light before it is crated.

  6. High-level installation

Our crew lifts the letters by crane, boom lift or hoist, sets them out from a full-size template, mounts the drivers where a technician can reach them and commissions the sign after dark.

Specification

Large building letter specification for towers and parapets

This is where we start for most building names. The final specification follows the wind exposure, the facade build-up and the access available, and every change appears as its own line on the quote.

ComponentOur standardUpgrade optionsWhy it matters
Returns2 to 3 mm aluminium, powder-coated to RALPVDF paint, or 316 stainless returns near the seaThicker returns stop long strokes twisting in the wind and hold their finish under direct sun.

Expert advice

Advice from our estimating and drawing team

Building names go wrong in predictable ways. These are the points we raise at the first meeting, because each one is cheap to settle on paper and very expensive to fix forty floors up.

Size for the sightline that matters

Start from the furthest point where the name genuinely earns attention, not the furthest point it can be seen. Our working rule is about 25 mm of letter height per 3 m of distance, so a name read from 300 m wants letters near 2.5 m. If drivers see the building at an angle, add 15 to 25 percent, because the letters appear compressed. We check the main sightline in person, at night, before we commit to a size.

Give the strokes and gaps room

A logo that looks crisp on a business card can turn into a glowing blob at 300 m. For front-lit letters read at range, we like stroke widths of at least one sixth of the letter height and slightly wider letter spacing than the brand guideline, since light bleeds across narrow gaps after dark. Thin serifs and tight scripts above about 60 m are usually redrawn or made as non-illuminated details.

Let the structure choose the fixing

Many UAE parapets are unreinforced blockwork behind a render or cladding skin, and curtain-wall crowns often have nothing solid to drill. We open up the parapet at the survey, then fix brackets back to the slab edge or columns. Where that is impossible, a steel frame behind the parapet carries the letters instead. On buildings with a facade consultant, we expect their review of the fixing detail before fabrication starts.

Budget for access as seriously as for aluminium

On a tower, cranes, building maintenance units or rope teams can be a large part of the total cost, and they come back for every repair. That is why we mount drivers where a technician can reach them, fit service panels into the returns, specify IP65 modules and add a timer. Spending a little more on serviceability usually saves several expensive access days over the life of the sign.

Choose colours for the July sun

A dark return on a south or west crown absorbs far more heat than a light one, which stresses the face and shortens LED life. Where the brand allows, we suggest lighter return colours or a white face with a coloured film, and PVDF paint on the most exposed sites. Arabic names deserve their own sizing too: dots and marks need extra height to survive the distance.

Pricing

Large building letters price in Dubai: what affects the cost

There is no price list for building names, because no two crowns are the same. We send an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours, once we have the name or logo, the building location, photos of the parapet and the road you want it read from.

Letter height and girth

Aluminium, LEDs and labour scale with the perimeter and face area of every letter, so a long name in 2 m letters costs far more than a short logo of the same height.

Height on the building

Work above a few floors needs a crane, building maintenance unit, mast climber or rope access team. Access is often one of the largest lines on a tower quote.

Support structure

Brackets into a sound slab edge are the leanest option. A steel frame, parapet strengthening or structural calculations add cost but are sometimes the only safe route.

Lighting style and controls

Front-lit letters need the fewest modules for their size. Halo or combined lighting, dimming, timers and photocells add parts and wiring time.

Finish and coastal specification

Standard powder coat suits most inland sites. PVDF paint, 316 stainless fixings and sealed joints for beachfront towers cost more and pay back in fewer repairs.

Drawings, method statements and permits

Authority drawings, landlord and consultant submissions and work-at-height method statements are prepared by our team and listed separately on the quote.

Approvals

Permits for large building letters in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Abu Dhabi

A building name almost always needs approval before installation. In Dubai that usually means Dubai Municipality, or the master developer or free-zone authority, such as DMCC, JAFZA or TECOM, where the building sits in their area. Sharjah and Ajman signs go through the relevant municipality, and Abu Dhabi free zones apply their own criteria. The building owner and the facade consultant normally sign off as well.

Our technical draftsmen prepare the elevation, shop drawings, structural plan and specification, check that the Arabic and English names match the licence or title deed, and follow the submission through. Work at height also needs method statements for the building management. Requirements vary by authority and change over time, so we confirm the current rules for your exact building at the survey.

FAQ

Large-Format Facade Letters questions we are asked most

How much do large building letters cost in Dubai?

The cost depends on letter height, the length of the name, the lighting style, the support structure and above all the height and access on the building. A short logo on a two-storey showroom costs a fraction of a long bilingual name on a tower crown. Send us the artwork, the address and photos of the parapet, and we will return an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

How big should letters be on a building?

Allow about 25 mm of letter height for every 3 m of viewing distance, then add 15 to 25 percent if most people see the building at an angle. A name that must read from 300 m therefore needs letters of around 2.5 m. We test the size on a photo mock-up of your actual building before cutting any aluminium.

How long does it take to make and install building letters?

It depends on the letter height, the number of internal frames, any steel structure and how long the building's consultant and the authority take to review. Fabrication, permits and booking access equipment are planned to run alongside each other. We give you a realistic schedule with the quote and update it once the approvals are in.

Do I need a permit for a name on top of my building?

Yes, in almost every case. Building names usually need approval from the municipality or the free-zone or master-developer authority, plus consent from the building owner and often the facade consultant. Our draftsmen prepare and submit the drawings, and we confirm the current requirement for your building at the survey.

Can large letters be fixed to a glass or cladding facade?

Not directly. Glass and thin cladding skins cannot carry the load of large letters in UAE wind. We fix brackets through to the slab edge or columns, or build a galvanised steel frame behind the parapet that carries the letters clear of the glazing. The facade consultant normally reviews the detail before we fabricate.

Are building letters better than a large lightbox on the roof?

Individual letters let the architecture show through and look lighter on a modern facade, which is why consultants and developers usually prefer them. A large lightbox or panel can be cheaper for complex logos and is easier to rebrand. On buildings with no clear zone for letters, a panel on a steel frame is sometimes the only practical choice.

Do you install building letters outside Dubai?

Yes. Our crews install across all seven emirates from our factory in Ajman, including Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. The site survey is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman, and we arrange the access equipment the building needs.

How are building letters maintained at height?

We design for maintenance from the start: drivers in a reachable, ventilated position, removable service panels in the returns, weep holes for drainage and IP65 modules. A yearly inspection from the building cradle or a rope team usually covers cleaning, fixings and connections. Our maintenance contracts and LED repair service cover signs we made and many we did not.
