Illuminated Shop Signs in the UAE

Illuminated shop signs, chosen for the street they face

Illuminated shop signs are signs with their own light source, almost always LEDs today, shining through a coloured face, washing the wall behind the letters, filling a box behind a printed face or forming the graphic itself as LED neon. Most UAE shops do much of their trade after sunset, so for restaurants, pharmacies, supermarkets, salons and showrooms the way a sign glows matters as much as what it says.

Choosing well starts with the street, not the catalogue. A pharmacy on a six-lane road needs reading distance from moving cars; a boutique in a walkable community is seen from ten metres by people on foot; a unit opposite a floodlit forecourt competes with glare. Then come the parts nobody photographs: the diffuser, the module spacing, the driver and where it sits, the timer. We build all of them in our Ajman factory and commission every sign after dark, because daylight hides every lighting fault.

Bayan Signage is the production arm of Bayan Advertising, which has worked in the UAE for 15 years, and our factory at Alam Square, Industrial Area 2, Ajman has been lighting signs since 2016. LED module assembly, driver wiring and full-brightness testing are done in-house by our own electricians, and the crew that wires your sign is the crew that connects it on site.

Our process

How we build illuminated shop signs in our Ajman factory

  1. Night survey where it matters

We check the frontage, viewing distances and competing light from neighbours and forecourts, locate the power point and agree a driver position that can be reached later. The survey is free in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.

  2. Lighting design

Our designers choose the method, colour temperature and letter sizes for your street, and draftsmen detail module spacing, driver locations and cable routes on the shop drawing.

  3. Fabrication

Faces and backs are CNC-routed or laser-cut, returns are bent and joined, and cases are powder-coated to your RAL colour, with drain holes and sealed glands built in.

  4. LED assembly and burn-in

Our electricians fit branded modules from one batch so colour matches across the sign, wire them to drivers loaded at roughly 70 to 80% of rating, and run everything at full brightness in our test area.

  5. Two-pass installation

First the letters or box are fixed and cables run to the driver location; then drivers, the isolator and controls are connected once the building supply is confirmed.

  6. Commissioning after dark

We check evenness, colour match between letters and timer settings at night, and dim the sign on site if it is too bright for the street, before handing over the warranty.

Specification

Illuminated shop sign specification: the chain of parts

Whatever the style, every lit sign is a chain from the light you see back to the switch on the wall. A weak link anywhere shows up at night, so this is what we specify at each one.

Expert advice

Advice from our lighting team

Almost every complaint we hear about lit signs comes down to light used without a plan. These are the rules our designers and electricians work to.

Bright is not the same as readable

An over-bright sign glares, and the letters bleed into each other, an effect called halation that is worst with thin fonts. For most UAE shopfronts at night, a face luminance of a few hundred candela per square metre reads well; brightly lit roads need more, quiet residential streets much less. We fit dimmable drivers where the street calls for it and set the level on site after dark, not in the workshop.

Lit letters can be smaller, but halo cannot

Because contrast is higher at night, a front-lit letter of 300 mm reads comfortably from about 35 to 40 m. A halo letter of the same height reads closer to 25 m, since the face is dark and only the outline glows. If your customers approach from a fast road or a far car park, choose a front-lit face for the name and keep halo lighting for the logo or for close-up signs.

Agree one colour temperature for the frontage

A cool white lightbox next to warm white letters looks like two different shops. Decide one colour temperature for everything on the frontage, including window displays and any canopy lighting, and stick to it. Warm white around 3,000 K flatters gold, wood and food; neutral or cool white suits clinics, pharmacies and technology brands.

Decide where the driver lives before the fit-out closes

Drivers are the part most likely to fail, and heat is why. Hidden in a sealed fascia or above a fixed ceiling, every repair becomes demolition. Agree an access hatch or a ventilated remote driver box with the fit-out contractor before the bulkhead is closed. It costs almost nothing at that stage and saves real money for years.

Set the timer to your real hours

A sign burning at 4 am for an empty street wastes power and LED life, and a sign that switches off at 10 pm in Ramadan, when the street is busiest, loses customers. Use a timer or photocell, update it when trading hours change, and remember that an astronomical timer follows sunset through the year without anyone touching it.

Pricing

Illuminated shop sign price in Dubai: what affects the cost

We quote every lit sign from its drawing and lighting design. Send your logo, the frontage size and a photo, and we usually send an itemised quote within 24 hours, with fabrication, electrical work, installation and permits on separate lines.

Lighting method

Lightboxes light large areas cheaply. Individual lit letters cost more per square metre, and halo or front-and-back lighting adds fabrication and LEDs.

Letter count and outline

For lit letters, the length of the outline drives metalwork and module count, so long names and detailed logos cost more than short, bold ones.

Component quality

Branded LEDs and properly rated drivers cost more at purchase, but they hold colour and fail far less often in summer heat.

Electrical works

Distance to the power point, a new isolator, conduits through the wall and coordination with the building electrician all affect the price.

Controls

A simple timer adds little. Dimming, astronomical timers and colour-change control add hardware and setup time on site.

Access and working hours

High fascias, night-only working windows and pedestrian management on busy pavements add lifting equipment, supervision and labour time to the job.

Approvals

Illuminated shop sign permits and lighting rules

Outdoor illuminated signs usually need approval from Dubai Municipality, Sharjah Municipality, Ajman Municipality or the free-zone authority for your area. Many master communities, malls and buildings add their own rules on brightness, colour temperature, animation and switch-off times, and signs close to major roads may face limits on flashing or moving light. We check these at the survey and prepare the drawings and lighting details for the submission.

The electrical side has its own checks. Signs must be connected by qualified electricians with proper protection and an accessible isolator, and in malls and managed towers the facility team usually inspects the connection before the sign is switched on. Requirements vary by site, so we confirm the current rules for your exact address.

Why Bayan Signage

Why businesses choose Bayan Signage for illuminated shop signs

LED work in-house

Module assembly, driver wiring and full-brightness testing happen at our Ajman factory, by our own electricians, not by a subcontractor on site.

Every method under one roof

Front-lit, halo, push-through, lightbox and LED neon are all built here, so we recommend what suits your street rather than what we happen to sell.

5-year outdoor warranty

Outdoor illuminated signs are covered for 5 years on LEDs, powder coat and structure, with a warranty document at handover.

Commissioned at night

FAQ

Illuminated Shop Signs questions we are asked most

How much do illuminated shop signs cost in Dubai?

The cost depends on the lighting method, the size and number of letters, the components, the electrical work and access. A lightbox on a deep fascia gives the most light for the money; individual halo or front-and-back-lit letters cost more. Send us your logo, frontage size and a photo, and we will send an itemised quote, usually within 24 hours.

How much does it cost to run an illuminated shop sign?

Running costs are usually small. A typical shopfront LED sign uses somewhere between a hundred and a few hundred watts, depending on size and method, so even twelve hours a night adds a modest amount to the monthly bill. A timer or photocell cuts this further by switching the sign off when the street is empty.

Front-lit or halo-lit: which should I choose?

Choose front-lit if the sign must be read from a distance or from moving cars, and halo-lit if it is seen up close and the brand wants a calm, premium look. If you want reach and elegance together, front-and-back-lit letters combine a lit face with a halo, at a higher cost.

Do illuminated shop signs need a permit?

Usually yes. Outdoor illuminated signs typically need approval from the municipality or the relevant free-zone authority, and many landlords and communities add rules on brightness and hours. We prepare the drawings and handle the submissions, and we confirm the current requirement for your location before fabrication starts.

How long do LED shop signs last?

A well-built LED sign typically lights reliably for many years; the modules we use are rated around 50,000 hours, and outdoor signs carry our 5-year warranty on LEDs, powder coat and structure. Drivers in hot, unventilated spots and cheap unbranded modules are what usually shorten the life, which is why we design against both.

Can my existing sign be converted to LED?

Often yes. Older fluorescent lightboxes and neon letters can usually be refitted with LED modules and new drivers, keeping the box or letters. This typically cuts power use substantially and reduces maintenance. We check the condition of the structure first, because there is no point relighting a box that is rusting through.

Why does one letter of my sign look darker than the rest?

A single dim letter usually means a failed LED string, a loose connector or water inside that letter. If several letters dim together, the driver is the more likely cause. Both are normally repairable on site without removing the whole sign; our LED sign repair team can usually find the fault in one night visit.

Can an illuminated sign change colour or animate?

Yes, RGB modules and controllers allow colour changes, fades and simple effects. Many authorities and landlords restrict flashing or animated signs, especially near roads where they can distract drivers. A slow, steady colour change is accepted far more often than flashing, and we check what is allowed for your site first.
